SPORT AND MUSIC-A PERFECT MATCH Unit Summary

WEEK/ LESSON *WK1/L1 ACTIVITY/INQUIRY QUESTION Music and Movement. An introduction to sound and movement. How is music used to enhance physical activity? Students will a combine a Gym workout with the recording of sounds generated by the various types of equipment used. How can we use physical activity to integrate the two disciplines of sport and music.! (Focus level 9, Health and Physical Education.) Students learn to set personal physical activity and/or fitness goals, develop an activity and/or fitness program and evaluate its success (AusVels Learning Focus level 9 ICT). they use complex ICT tools and techniques to visually represent, model, reframe and refine their thinking to assist in developing new understanding. If the school has no gymnasium then an excursion will be needed to a local fitness centre. Sports clothes. Digital recording device.

ACTIVITY/INQUIRY QUESTION Indigenous dance, an introduction. Including cultural visit from a local indigenous tribe member to discuss and demonstrate. How have the Aboriginals integrated physical activity into their culture? What role does it play?

This knowledge and understanding will enrich their ability to participate positively in the ongoing development of Australia. (AusVels Learning Focus level 9 ICT). they use complex ICT tools and techniques to visually represent, model, reframe and refine their thinking to assist in developing new understanding. (AusVels Learning Focus level 9, ARTS) As students work towards the achievement of Level 10 standards in the Arts, they design, make and present arts works. In doing so, they develop skills in making decisions about creative ways of generating and implementing ideas.

Making a soundscape/ rhythm track. Using the sounds recorded at the gymnasium students will build a soundscape/ rhythm track with the use of appropriate ICT. Can sport and music provide a canvas for an creative and artistic work?

WEEK/ LESSON WK2/L2

ACTIVITY/INQUIRY QUESTION Working out with Music. Students to take part in a physically active workout whereby they do P.A along to the sound of recorded music instruments and percussions. How does the music make you feel when you are doing Physical Activity? Investigation of motivational music in sport. How music has been used in advertising and sports clubs to motivate athletes and fans. Students (in the same mixed-ability groupings) will research their chosen dance style/type and prepare a presentation to the class for the following lesson. They will follow a rubric and begin drafting their presentation. Key Questions: What information do you want to display? What is the dance style? Why do these people dance? Evaluate what you think the function of this dance is? Why? Where is this dance from?

ACTIVITY/INQUIRY QUESTION Writing and recording your own motivational sports song. What musical and lyrical ingredients go into making up a good motivational song?

Students, individually or collaboratively, compose and present their musical response to an issue holding personal interest for them. (AusVels Learning Focus level 9, Health and Physical Education. As students work towards the achievement of Level 10 standards in Information and Communications Technology, they use complex ICT tools and techniques to visually represent, model, reframe and refine their thinking to assist in developing new understanding.

WEEK/ LESSON WK4/L1

ACTIVITY/INQUIRY QUESTION Students (in the same mixed-ability groupings) finalise and present their work on a dance style from a different culture to their peers. They evaluate and communicate relevant information about the dance including the reasons people perform it and they show a YouTube clip of people performing it. Key Questions: If the dance style is from a cultural background different from your own, what cultural protocols do you need to consider?

ACTIVITY/INQUIRY QUESTION This lesson follows up on the participation in the Zumba and Indigenous dance classes. Students will investigation and compare the history and culture of Zumba and indigenous dance. A hands on experience of playing latin percussion and indigenous instruments.
