Recognize, know, use and demonstrate a variety of appropriate arts elements and principles to produce, review and revise original works in the arts. c. CC.1.4.4.A Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. I. Performance Objectives - The fourth grade students will identify what is needed in a safety kit by making a list and then looking through magazines cutting out what they need. - The fourth grade students will explain how flooding occurs by showing their understanding on an Individual quiz. II. Instructional Materials 1. Science Explorer Weather and Climate Teacher Edition by Barbara Brooks Simons 2. http://www.brainpop.com/science/earthsystem/floods/ 3. III. Subject Matter/ Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea) A. Prerequisite Skills 1. Students should know how to complete guided notes. 2. Students should know how to make collages. 3. Students should know how to complete a journal entry. B. Key Vocabulary 1. Flooding - a great flowing or overflowing of water 2. Flood hazard - the risk of damage to lives, livelihoods or property because of the floodwater 3. Channel - the riverbed of a river 4. Channel capacity - the amount of water a river can hold before it floods its surrounding area 5. Flood Plains - lands bordering rivers and streams that normally are dry but are covered with water during floods

6. Flash flood watch - flood is possible 7. Flash flood warning - flood is occurring C. Big Idea: What is flooding and how does it occur? IV. Implementation A. Introduction 1. Teacher will introduce the todays topic is flooding. 2. Teacher will ask: Does anyone have any ideas of what flooding is? 3. Good, anyone else? 4. There will introduce the topic flooding by having the students watch a BrainPop video. http://www.brainpop.com/science/earthsystem/floods/ B. Development 1. Teacher will hand out guided notes to everyone 2. Students will then follow along through the power point and fill in the blanks when needed. 3. Teacher will go through the flooding power point until slide entitled safety 4. Teacher will ask if anyone has any questions 5. Teacher will finish the remaining power point on safety 6. Students will continue to fill out their guided notes. 7. Teacher will ask if any students have any questions 8. Students will then complete the Magazine Activity 9. Students will cut out two/three extra pictures to use in their journal. 10. Students will share their collages with the class. 11. Teacher will call on one group at a time until all groups have shared. 12. Teacher will ask students review questions. - Can anyone tell me what a flood is? - Please tell me 4 things that should be in a safety kit for flooding. - Where should we go when flooding occurs? - What is a channel? - What is channel capacity? - What is the difference between watch and warning? C. Closure 1. Students will take a quiz 2. Students will complete their journal entry for the day "Safety Items Needed during a Flood." 3. Students will glue their cut out pictures under the title and write about why these items would be needed. 4. Accommodations / Differentiation For Jake, who has a physical impairment and is using a wheelchair, I will make sure that walk ways are wide enough and continuously cleared to all materials and doorway.
