September 17, 1862 Battle at Antietam "The Bloodiest Day of the Civil War" Prelude September 15-16, 1862: - Lee's Confederate Army = 40,000 - McClellan's Union forces = 70,000 - Both armies met in a wooded and farming country near Antietam Creek - The kicker - A Union soldier found a copy of Lees battle orders wrapped around some cigars.

The Battle at Antietam was really three separate battles: -One battle was in a cornfield

- Lee's forces were arranged in the shape of the number "7"

- Union troops were hidden in the tall corn stalks -resulting in the worst single hour of the fight: - casualties were estimated at one death per second

-One battle was at a sunken road:

- 10,000 Union soldiers fired for several hours at - 2,200 Confederates in their entrenchments

- rebels were forced to withdraw

- Rebel forces were driven back to Antietam Creek
