TajjalanistheenigmaticmethodtodescribeRealityunliketheaphoristicmethodoftheMandukya UpanishadfavouredinthelaterSutraliterature.Shandilyawhenhesaidsarvamkhaluidambrahman tajjalanitishantaupasite(ChandogyaUpanishadIII.14.1)headoptedthecrypticwayforsayinghowGod couldberegardedastheorigin,theend,andthelifeofallthings.[1]ItisaSanskritword,anAdjective,that meansabsorbedandbreathinginthatorproduced.[2]Itisacompoundwordinterpretedasequivalenttotaj ja,tallaandtadanathatrepresenttheattributesofBrahman.[3]

TajjalanisariddlethatdescribesinapositivewaythethreebasicattributesofBrahmanwithregardto explainingtheprocessofcreationetc.fromtheprimevalAtman.TaittiriyaUpanishadII.1/III.1proposesthe TheoryoftheemanationoftheelementsfromBrahman,thesameUpanishaddefinesBrahmanasExistence, ConsciousnessandInfinityanddeclaresthatalonemightberegardedastheUltimateRealityofthings,from whichallthesebeingsareborn,bywhichtheylivewhenborn,towhichtheyrepairandintowhichtheyare finallyresolved,becausebehindthecosmostheremustbeanexistencewhichmustberegardedas responsibleforitsorigin,sustenance,andabsorption.[4]And,Shandilya,throughtheuseofthephrase, Tajjalan,revealsthesecretnameofBrahmanbywhichhesaysBrahmanshouldbeworshipped.Therefore, BadarayanadefinesBrahmanasJanamadiasayayatah(BrahmaSutraI.1.2)meaning,"That(is Brahman)fromwhich(arederived)thebirthetc.ofthis(universe)"inwhichregardAdiShankarastatesthat thephrase,janmadiisabahuvrihicompoundwherethesubjectpresentedisapprehendedalongwithits attributes.[5]ThisdefinitionofBrahmaniscalled,Tatasthalakshana.
