WEBER COUNTY LIBRARY SUMMER PROGRAMMING !

Abstract
One of the main goals of any library is to get patrons to come in to the library, get involved and then keep them coming back. Achieving this goal with the younger readers is particularly important. The patron services for the Weber County Library are primarily focusing on providing age-appropriate programs for Early-Learner, Childrens and the Young Adult readers during the summer months. These months are viewed as an essential time period where the target groups could either be inspired by programs of the library or stop coming all together. After weeks of planning, each of the target groups have programs that have been created, organized, and budgeted for the months of June through August. Each program was designed with a specific age and target group in mind. The programs give a thorough description of the stated outcomes, the activities involved, and the evaluation strategies used to determine success. In addition to the previous information the program requirements, use of the staff and volunteers, and the estimated cost have been calculated. Marketing strategies have also been employed by producing a calendar of events with times, dates, and program titles. Flyers with program activities and information have been created to advertise the coming events in order to maximize attendance. In order to improve services to the target groups, questionnaires for the individual programs have been created. These will help determine the programs success, compile statistical attendance information for comparative reference, and include a section to make suggestions and request future programming. All programming takes place at the Main Branch in Ogden, UT.

Introduction

WEBER COUNTY LIBRARY SUMMER PROGRAMMING !

The Weber County Library in Utah has in the past suffered from poor programming to the younger generation. Not only was there low attendance at teen and childrens programs, but there was no summer reading program. With a new library director in charge, the program has been redesigned to bring in younger library patrons and their families. All of the summer program events take place at the main library branch in Ogden, UT, although the services are provided to all of Weber County. The Main Branch is a large building of 5,000 square feet, with multiple meeting rooms. It features newly redesigned children and young adult areas on opposite sides of the library. There is a small auditorium for community use, as well as a classroom and a story telling room attached to the new childrens area. Use of these areas are free for community members or businesses, they just need to register in advance to reserve the spaces. The library is determined to make the best use of their space and budget to provide enticing and exciting summer programming for the community they serve.

Demographics
According to the US Census, Weber County, UT has a 2011 population of 234,420 people (US Census Report, 2012). This programming aims to target teenagers, children, and early learners, which make up almost a third of the countys population. The Census reports that as of 2010 29.9% of the county was made up of those under the age of 18, which is an amount of approximately 70,000 people. Therefore, it is very important that the library focus on improving its services to youth in the community. The Census report also shows that 17.1% of Weber County is Hispanic, or of Latino origin. For this reason, there has been a bilingual story telling event added to the summer programming. This is a way to incorporate minorities into library services, and share their culture with the community as a whole.

Programming Early Learners

The Dance with Me program is designed to bring in both new and old patrons alike. The age for the program participant is one to three, and each will be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. It is a relatively short program, but is repeated throughout the season. In this way, it will get the adults used to the library and the services they offer, and familiarize the early learners with the library as a happy and fun place to be. Weber County Library believes that, One of the most compelling questions for any group of professionals is does our work make a difference and, if so, what kind of differences does it make? This question is particularly relevant to childrens services staff because so much of their work may look like play to outsiders (McKenzie & Stooke, 2012, p.47). While this program is fun for the children, it also familiarizes patrons with the library. After the program, books related to the music played that day will be available for checkout, which reinforces the library in the routine of the child and adult. This program doesnt require any budgetary expenditure other than the time for the librarian to lead the program. Dance with Me consists of a type of music being played, to which the children and their caregivers can dance. The type of music will change each time the class meets, and will consist of classical, country, rock, Latin, folk/oldies, jazz, and childrens singalong. For the country, folk/oldies, and children sing-along events, in addition to the music, there will be a story read that coincides with the type of music. All of the music and stories read during the program are already in the library collection. The Cradles to Crayons program is a drop in program that doesnt require registration. It will take place once a month during the summer program, and is only a half hour long in

WEBER COUNTY LIBRARY SUMMER PROGRAMMING !

duration. The program is an interactive story time for children and their caregivers, which will allow them to get used to services offered by the library. Cradles to Crayons introduces Early Learners to an agenda that is both social and allows them to learn by being read to. Weber County Library wants them to take this literacy into their futures. According to Rakes, the single most important element for success in school is access to books. Reading to young children contributes to language development, readiness for school and children seeing reading and learning as fun which creates lifelong learners (Rakes, 2010, p.9). Additionally, it is helpful because the only budgetary concern is the pay for the librarian leading the program. During the program the librarian leading the program, along with help from a paraprofessional or volunteer, will lead the children in reading stories, playing music, and interacting with each other in the storytelling room. While playtime seems lighthearted and silly, it is important to consider that play is the work of childhood. Children take play seriously, and so should we. For children, and especially young children, play is the process of building knowledge of the world and their place in it (Diamant-Cohen et. al., 2012, p.3). Carpeted mats and pillows from the childrens area will be used in the room to help make it more inviting for the young children. Since this program involves very young children, it will take place in an open and inviting space where children and their caregivers are free to move around, thus interacting with each other and the librarian. This program was adapted for use from the Providence Public Library in Providence, RI.

Children
The Childrens story telling program is a repeating program that focuses on different themes each time it meets. On the fourth Tuesday of each month, the theme will be Bugs, Moods and Feelings, and Space. Each theme will be followed throughout that event, with stories

WEBER COUNTY LIBRARY SUMMER PROGRAMMING !

and activities that match. On the second Tuesday of each month will be the multi-cultural story telling events, which focus on a different culture and include Mexico, Hawaii, and China. Again, each of these themes carries through the events and stories during the event. Finally, the bilingual story telling will be at the beginning of the month, and will take place entirely in Spanish, conducted by a native Spanish speaking librarian. This event will read non-themed, but exciting books to engage the children, and is to be promoted for both those who speak fluent Spanish, and those who know just a little. The reason for this is that non-English speaking families may not know the library has something for them, but if you hold a program celebrating their culture, they will discover the library has books in their languagesespecially when you feature programming for children (Peck, 2006, p.74). The goals of these storytellings are to introduce children to the library in a fun and exciting way, while at the same time teaching them something. Additionally the program serves to interest children in reading. The budgetary expenditures for these programs are not extremely high. Snacks for each event, and prizes for participation are the main costs, as well as the standard cost for the librarians time leading the event. The Everyone Flying program is a onetime childrens event. The goal of this program is to foster imagination and exploration with the children that participate. The program hires a pilot to visit the library and interact with the children. This interaction is aided by a librarian, and will consist of different activities. The program starts off with a story time that encompasses many different types of famous flyers, from Amelia Earhart to hang gliders. In between the stories, pictures will be shown of different types of flying animals. This provides a chance for interaction with the children by asking them questions about the pictures, to gauge what they

WEBER COUNTY LIBRARY SUMMER PROGRAMMING !

already know, and where their interests lie. After the story time and picture section of the program, the craft and music section will begin. This section is combined, and will require the assistance of the parents or caregivers for the children. The craft is also held in the storytelling room, where tables and chairs are setup for use. While the craft is happening, flying music is played through an audio system, to provide another level of interaction with the theme. There are two crafts available, paper airplanes and origami. Because of dexterity issues with the younger children, there will be premade origami birds and airplanes for the children to color. However, if anyone wants to fold their own, the librarian will be on hand to lead them in doing so. After the craft time, the program is over, but there will be books available for checkout that focus on all sorts of flying topics related to the program. In this way, the children will be able to continue their exploration of the topic outside of the physical library space. The budgetary cost for this program includes a fee for a pilot to come speak with the children. All of the books and music are available in the library collection for free. Additionally the craft materials will be at no cost because scrap paper will be used and other craft materials are already on hand. Fathers Day gifts for Dad is a craft program for children that requires registration. It is a onetime event that lasts for approximately an hour. It would be preferred for each child to have a parent or caregiver at the event, but is not required. To combat the messy aspect of the craft and the younger age of the children, there will be two volunteers assisting with the program. This program introduces children and their families to the library in a fun and inviting manner. Each participant has a handcrafted gift to take home with them, and a fun experience to share with their fathers. The library is sensitive to the fact that not everyone might have a father, so the program will be marketed to all children of the target age, and those without fathers will still be

WEBER COUNTY LIBRARY SUMMER PROGRAMMING !

able to attend and make a gift. The budgetary output for this program is fairly low. It includes the time for the librarian running the program, but this is offset by assistance from unpaid volunteers. Additionally, output is required for the crafting supplies, but some of them may be reusable for a future event. This program is important in the programming schedule because it offers the chance to showcase the library as an important place to go for holiday crafts. If families become aware of this distinction, they will be more likely to come back again for future programs. Future programming tied into this event could include mothers day and teacher appreciation crafts.

Young Adults
The Dreams and Handwriting analysis program is a one time program that fosters a connection with Weber State University, the local college. The program enlists the services of a handwriting and dream expert from the psychology department of the college to assist with the program. This not only exposes the participants to a new job field, but cultivates an environment to introduce them to post-secondary education options locally. This program is a collaboration that strengthens both the librarys program, as well as furthering the aims of the college. The library benefits by young adults using the library, and recognizing it as an important place for information gathering, programming, and fun experiences. The college benefits by informing students about the fields of study they offer, and educating them about a possible option for future attendance. The program will start with an introduction to the subject by the guest speaker, who will provide context for use of these analyses, and how they work. Then, after collecting samples, the speaker will demonstrate with these examples. This is a fun program, which both allows attendants to learn about a subject and fosters a link between two entities.

WEBER COUNTY LIBRARY SUMMER PROGRAMMING !

10

The budget for this program is allocated to guest speaker fees and the time for a librarian to be in attendance. Since it is only a one time program, and focuses on teens, the library feels the expenditures are minimal in comparison to the rewards. Additionally, it could increase circulation of books related to the topics, as these books will be available for checkout after the program. Programming for teens can be intensive to plan because it is easy to lump teens together, but it is important to remember that we are talking about a diverse group of people diverse in age, interests, maturity, ethnicity, and also diverse in how they pick up information and what catches their eye (Hannan, 2011, p.32). The Calligraphy program is a three time continuous program for young adults that will foster a connection with Weber State University, and provide both a fun and educational environment. The program enlists the services of a calligrapher from the art department of the local college to assist with the program. The budget for this program is a little bit higher, because it is a repeating program, and will require both payment for the professional calligrapher, as well as two librarians for assistance, each time the program meets. While the time and money for the librarians assisting with the program is great, the rewards are also. The library feels justified in spending that portion of the budget in this way because

WEBER COUNTY LIBRARY SUMMER PROGRAMMING !

11

providing services for young adults is important to their mission. The evaluation process for this program will determine whether it or programs like it can be offered again. This can be done by realizing that an evaluation isn't just about answering the question, "did they like it?" The purpose of assessment is to determine the impact of an activity: specifically, how did it change the lives of the participants (Gallaway, 2010, p.26)? The Teen Clothes Swap is a onetime drop-in program for teenage girls. It is a two hour event that will be in collaboration with a local Forever 21 store. The collaboration is mutually beneficial to the library and the store. The library gets to host a program aimed at raising self esteem for teenage girls, while the retail store gets promotion for their store. The program aims to prepare the participants for the school year fashion wise, providing a cheap or free alternative to buying a whole new wardrobe. It also aims to raise the self-esteem of the participants by educating them on fashion, and what works best for their body type. Finally, it also aims to make them familiar with library services, and using the library. This program will consist of clothes donations the month before the swap, and then during the event, the teen girls will gather and decide which clothes they would like to take or trade. During the event, a guest speaker will be on hand to assist the girls with their choices, and provide information and advice about body types, and the best color choices for each girl. The budget for this event is rather high in comparison with other programs. However, the library feels it is a positive place for expenditure because of the outcomes. Each of the aims the library has with this program will benefit its community and citizens. There are to be one librarian and two volunteers with this program, and in addition, two extra librarians will be staffing the main desk while the event is occurring. There will be a fee for the guest speaker teaching about fashion and helping the participants, and

advertising for the program is also in the budget. Program adapted from the Orange County Library System in Orlando, FL.

Summer Reading Program

The Summer Reading program last the entire summer, and is for kids and young adults alike. The program encompasses all sorts of events and activities for its participants. It offers a joint partnership with the community center and the performing arts center on summer events they are already having. In this way, the library is promoting local events and they are assisting with a literacy program for the participants. There are two sides to the summer reading program, the classic version, and the new version. In the new version, children and teens that attend a library program get to mark a category off of their reading program list. They will mark off an event or action from each of the ten categories, and when this is completed they have met the summer goal. For the classic version, participants will read twelve books or for thirty hours total to meet their summer goal. At each summer library program geared towards children and young adults, additional summer reading prizes will be given to the children, such as candy, stickers, and small toys. When the participant finishes the program they will turn in their summer reading form to a librarian, and will receive a goody bag in exchange. Additionally, teens earn entry into a grand prize drawing, and can earn additional entries by completing additional activities. The summer reading program is also partnered with local businesses by giving away coupons and gift certificates to these area businesses. A large portion of the summer budget is allocated to this program, but it lasts the entire summer season and benefits the community as a whole. It promotes literacy and involvement among children and young adults, and offers fun summer

activities to entertain everyone. This program was adapted for use from the Lawrence Public Library in Lawrence, KS.
