Lesson Plan Template Lesson #: 1

Fall 2013

Teacher Candidate: Courtney Holmes Subject/ Grade: Math/ 2 Learning Objective: (TWS Section 5)

Date and Time of Lesson: 9/26/13- 10:15

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s, using equal groups. Alignment with Standards: (TWS Section 5) 2.NBT.2 Count within 1000; skip count by 5s, 10s, and 100.

Developmental Appropriateness: The learning objective is appropriate because the students had previously learned about skip counting using a hundred chart. This lesson furthers the different strategies that are used to help students skip count. Lesson Objective(s) Assessment(s) of the Objectives The students will be assessed on their in class work (On My Own worksheet) and their homework. Essential Questions Use of Formative Assessment

The students will be able to skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s,using equal groups

How can equal groups The outcome of the help me add? assessment will determine if the lesson is retaught or not. I will continue to encourage the students to use the strategy.

Accommodations: Early finishers will be able to read the books that they have checked out from the library. For our slow paced learner, Mrs. Latham or I will work with him one-on-one to make sure he understands. Materials: Math workbooks, pencils, connecting cubes, power point, and Promethean Board. Procedures:

1. I will start the lesson by writing the word equal groups on the board. I will ask the students, As mathematicians, when you see this word, what do you think? I will allow the students to think about this and then tell me what they think it means. Once we have discussed these words, I will then draw eight hearts onto the board and put them into groups of two. I will ask the students, How many groups do you see? I will give them time to answer. I will then ask them, Does each group have an equal number of hearts? We will then discuss what number we can use to skip count. 2. I will explain to the students that we are going to be using connecting cubes to help us skip count by putting them into equal groups. We will be getting into groups of two, and each group will get two rods of connecting cubes with ten connecting cubes in each rod. I will tell the students what will and will not be expected while using the cubes. I will then allow the students to play with them for two minutes. Before I pass them out, I will make sure they know that when two minutes are up, play time is over and it is time to work. 3. We will begin to model with the cubes how to make equal groups. I will emphasize that when you make equal groups, you can use them to skip count. We will begin by making three groups with two cubes in each group. We will discuss what number we will use to skip count to find the total number in each group. We will then make four groups with five cubes in each group. We will discuss what number we will use to skip count to find the total number of cubes in each group. 4. Next we will begin working in the students books in Explore and Explain. We will then move on together to the See and Show. Once we have completed this , the students will move on to On my Own. After about ten minutes of work time , we will go over their work together. Activity Analysis: In the lesson for one activity we will be using connecting cubes to model how you can use equal groups to help you skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s. We will be using these so that the students will have hands on models and something that they can physically move and manipulate. We will also be using the Promethean Board for this lesson. I will be using the board so that the students will be able to see exactly where in their books we will be looking, and also so I can model for them what their work should look like.
