Rev. 2013

Teacher Candidate: Courtney Holmes Subject/Grade: Science/2 Date and Time Lesson will be taught: 10/24/13 - 1:00 pm Learning Objective: (must support unit objectives identified in TWS 3)
By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to explain how a liquid is turned into a solid, and a solid is turned into a liquid.

Alignment with Standards: (must support unit standards identified in TWS 3) 2-4.2 Exemplify matter that changes from a solid to a liquid and from a liquid to a solid. SSCA: Section 1. (A) The General Assembly finds that: (1) A safe and civil environment in school is necessary for students to learn and achieve high academic standards. Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: (should parallel information in TWS Section 3) The learning objective is appropriate for the students because it is aligned with the state standards, and it builds upon their knowledge of Matter. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: (must support unit assessments identified in TWS 3)
Lesson Objective(s) Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) The assessment of the objective will be the students response to the questions in their activity book and their response to the activity. Assessment for Objective 2 Use of Formative Assessment (TWS section 7) The outcome of the students response to both the questions and activity will determine if I reteach the lesson, or continue on.

By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to explain how a liquid is turned into a solid and a solid is turned into a liquid. Objective 2 (if applicable)

Accommodations: (should parallel information in TWS 3 and show use of TWS 1 data)
For our slow paced learner, I will assign another student to work with him when answering the questions in the activity book. Early finisher may read a book when finished with their activity.

Materials: Science activity books, Promethean board, flip chart, pencils, baggies, and ice. Procedures: 1. We will begin the lesson by recapping the previous lesson on the three states of matter and their
properties. 2. I will tell the students that there are ways that you can change the properties of matter and that today we are going to learn how to turn a solid into a liquid and a liquid into a solid. I will give them an example of how water (a liquid) in a puddle will turn into a gas and disappear when heated by the sun. I will ask them How do you think the water disappears? I will explain that the main focus for todays lesson will be on liquids and solids, and that we will talk about gasses in a future lesson. 3. We will then look in the activity books and read about how to turn liquids into solids and solids into liquids. As we read we will answer the questions in the book and discuss how the students got their answers. 4. We will then move on to the activity. I will have written instructions up on the board, and I will also go over all of the instructions and what is expected of them during the activity. They will be getting with their share partner to conduct the experiment. Each group will be given one baggie with ice cubes in it. I will tell the students that they are going to melt the ice a fast as they can, any way that they can. They will be given no more than five minutes to melt their ice. They are to record on sheet of paper how they melted their ice and how long it took for it to melt. Once everyone has completed the activity, we will come back together and discuss the different strategies that each group used to melt their ice. I will ask

the students what pattern they noticed with each group. They should all notice that each group used heat to melt their ice and that heat is always used to change a solid to a liquid. 5. To wrap up the lesson, I will ask the students What would we need to do to turn all of this liquid back into a solid? (ex. We would need to put it back into the freezer so it would freeze back into a solid.)

Activity Analysis: (must support TWS 3 and show use of TWS 1 data)
One activity that I will use is the students activity books. We will be reading through this and answering the questions throughout. This activity supports the objective because the questions get the students thinking in ways to help them understand how to turn a liquid into a solid and a solid into a liquid. The second activity that I am using is the melting ice in a baggie. This activity supports the objective because the students have to find their own way to turn a solid into a liquid and be able to tell me what caused this change. I will be using the Promethean Board for this lesson to show the students the flip chart, and so the students will have written instructions.
