COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to help students strengthen essential reading and writing skills, providing them with extra literacy support they need in order to graduate. Students will read informational, graphic, literary text, and focus on locating information, identifying main ideas and supporting details, building vocabulary, and consolidating skills in the application of key comprehension and communication strategies. This course will help students develop core learning strategies. TEXTBOOK/ RESOURCES: Language Power G, The Grade Ten Test of Reading and Writing Workbook , Dont Panic-More Practice for the OSSLT, Writing for Results: Academic and Professional Writing Tasks, Reading and Writing for Success, Six-Way Paragraphs, Canadian Student Writers Guide. COMMUNICATION OF STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT Student progress and achievement are communicated to the students on an on-going basis through: interim progress reports, student-teacher conferences, verbal/written feedbacks, daily practices, formative assessments, and summative evaluations. See student agenda for detailed information on mid-term and final reporting of student achievement of curriculum expectations and learning skills. Learning is the responsibility of the students. If students experience any kind of difficulty with their studies, access to remedial help is available from the teacher by arrangement. The teacher may contact parents/guardians regarding any concerns about student progress and achievement. A parent/guardian may contact the teacher regarding any concern or issue about student progress and achievement in person (preferably by appointment), by phone (416) 394-3180 ACCOMMODATIONS FOR EXCEPTIONAL AND ESL/ELD STUDENTS Appropriate accommodations for exceptional and ESL/ELD students are provided by the teacher following recommendations as outlined in each identified students Individual Education Plan (IEP) and/or Annual Education Plan (AEP). Summative evaluation is represented by a percentage grade which is a weighted average of the three achievement categories as outlined in the Ontario curriculum documents:

LATE ASSIGNMENTS POLICY and Speaking In accordance with the Growing Success 2010 document, the following policy will be applied for all assignments: students will be given ample notice of the due dates for summative assignments. Students who do not submit assignments on the due date will be allowed one grace day, but will face a marks deduction of 5%, unless a medical or parents note is provided and verified. If no such note is provided, or if the student fails to submit the assignment on the grace day, a mark of zero will be awarded for that assignment
