Artifact Reflection Artifact Title: Statistics Lesson Plan, Praxis II Scores, and In-Service Learning Date: Fall 2013

ARTIFACT DESCRIPTION

The lesson plan is a lesson that I gave to a Project Lead the Way class (PLTW) called Principles of Engineering (POE). I created the lesson and followed the UW-Platteville School of Education Lesson Planning Template. This lesson was given during my prestudent teaching at Platteville High School during the fall semester. The lesson was on statistics in engineering and design. The Praxis II scores are from the summer of 2013 when I completed and passed my content test with a score of 177. The in-service learning is a pamphlet and business card from one of the teachers that went to the in-service. The in-service took place on Wednesday, October 23 at the University of Wisconsin Platteville. ALIGNMENT REFLECTION

Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment My lesson plan, my Praxis II scores and in-service learning align with Standard 1 Content is: The teacher understand the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the disciplines she or he teachers and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for pupils. I chose standard 1 because the lesson plan that I created aligns with the common core standards for Technology Education in: 4C2.a, IMT1.a, IMT1.d, ICT1.a, ICT1.g, and ICT1.k. This lesson applies to these standards because, the majority of these standard focus on information and communication technologies. Take IMT1.a for example: Students will analyze, select and use information and communication technologies by analyzing how communication happens, the different forms of communication and how it affects society. The students were able to learn this common core standard because the students had to be able to look at different charts, such as a bar, line and pie charts, and be able to understand what each bar, line point or section stood for. The students had to understand how to collect and organize all of the data to use the equations to find the mean, median and mode. Not only were the students asked to understand and analyze this information but they were also asked in an activity to roll dice and flip coins and create their own bar, line and pie charts. In order to do this they needed to be able to understand how to put together the experimental data that they collected and then use the equations that they learned during the lecture part of lesson and apply them to their own data.

In order for my students to get the most out of this lesson I spread it over a two and a half day period. This way I could make sure that the students fully understood the equations that I had to get through to them during the lecture part. I even had to change my lesson at the end of class because the students asked me about what standard deviation was. I could not come up with a good answer, so I showed them a Khan Academy video on standard deviation. After this video the students and I were both able to better understand what standard deviation was. The next day and a half I grouped the students into pairs and had them work on a worksheet that taught the students hands on what we had just learned in the lecture. They were able to roll dice and flip coins and then use this data to create a histogram about what the likely hood is of getting that statistic. Everything that I taught and had the students do during this lesson I always tried to bring back why this in important to them in their future. I explained to them that engineers look at how often a certain amount of products fail and they need to be able to look at these numbers and see if it is cost effective to make the product. Also, if a student doesnt want to be an engineer I showed them how ticket prices for airlines are based off of histograms and how much they can charge people the closer it gets to the departure date. UW Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Alignment KSD1.a. Demonstrates knowledge of content and pedagogy: The candidate displays extensive content knowledge of his/her subject areas and demonstrates a continuing search for new content knowledge, resources, and best instructional practices, while understanding student diversity and student misconceptions and misunderstandings as key to the teaching process. My Praxis II scores show that I do know the content that I am going to be teaching in the very near future. I was able to get the get to the passing score level and passed it by 18 points. The in-service learning that I went to also allowed me to see the changes that are happening in the common core standards and how I can use them. I was able to get a lot of resources and website links from the department of public instruction. The main goal of the in-service was to make sure that the students that I teach are getting the most out of everything that I teach and that they are able to use the information that I present to them throughout the rest of their life. Secondary KSD Alignment KS3.c. Engages Students in Learning What I learned about teaching/learning: I learned that I need to know the content that I am teaching and continue to adapt to the changes that are going to be happening all the time. One of the biggest aspects that I need to be aware of is the continuing improvements and innovations going on in technology. As a

technology education major I need to be able to keep up with the ever-changing technology and find ways to implement them into my classroom. What I learned about myself as a prospective educator: As a prospective educator I found out that there are a lot of resources that I can use on the DPI website that I need to take advantage of. Also, it was very helpful to me to go to the inservice and find out what the state expects from me as it gets closer and closer to full implementation of the common core standards in 2014. I also learned that I need to continue to go to classes and further my education throughout my career as a teacher in order to know what the up coming innovations and be able to know what ways students are learning best.
