November Family Project Build a 3D Monster!

Chers parents, Enclosed in this package is the written description of the friendly monster that your child created in class. The information in the text was based on a 2D monster they built using shapes and colours. Your child wrote a draft (with sentence structures provided) and then wrote a final copy. Your child has practiced reading the paragraph aloud and can do so with little to no assistance. The goal is for your child to demonstrate reading comprehension of his/her own writing. Your family project is to recreate the friendly monster that your child created with whatever medium you choose. I would love for them to be three dimensional if possible, but the project is supposed to be fun so do as much or as little as you choose. I would suggest using recyclable materials, paper mach, boxes, felt, fabric, or whatever else you have handy. I do request that you send the written description by your child back to school along with the final project so we can do some work with them in class. It will be fun to compare the original monster with your creation. Projects are due Wednesday, November 27th 2013. Amusez-vous bien!

Have your child read the sentence, and then colour the monster appropriately. Vocabulary sheets are provided in case you need assistance. 2. Cut out the sight word cards and play Go Fish. Be sure to practice saying the word aloud. Vocabulary sheets are provided in case you need assistance. 3. Draw the corresponding image on the back of the word cards. Play flash card games. Please continue to complete these activities throughout the next few weeks. I request that you complete each of them at least once, and return your work to school with the final project and other package contents.

2. Read the Text

GOAL: Demonstrate Fluidity in Reading Have your child read the text to you. I suggest that you refer to our reading routines: - Pick a comfortable spot to read - Stay in one spot - Read the whole time - Get started right away - Use all the time available - Look at the page the whole time - Follow the text left to right with your finger - Take a deep breath at periods and comas to recognize punctuation

3. Illustrate the Monster

GOAL: Check for Understanding Illustrating the monster will serve as a means to check for understanding, and plan your project. Have your child write their name and the name of the monster on the sheet provided. Draw the monster as accurately as possible. Refer to the text often during the drawing process and try to use the colour, shape and number vocabulary when speaking. Please use colour, although you may use pencil crayons, felt markers, etc. Your child can also reflect back to the 2D monster back at school when deciding the placement of the body parts or other details of their original creation, and this additional information should be depicted in the drawing. However, be sure to ask your child if that is a characteristic of their ORIGINAL monster, and ensure that they are NOT adding new details.

4. Make a List of Materials

GOAL: Plan the Project Discuss how you can build a re-creation of the 2D monster. What supplies could be used? Will it be 2D or 3D? If it is 2D, will it be flat and smooth, or bumpy? Can you feel all the sides of a 3D object? If you require supplies or suggestions on how to complete the creation itself, please contact me at your earliest convenience.

5. Build the Monster

GOAL: Visually Represent the Text Build the monster as a family! Enjoy the time to create and speak French using the vocabulary as often as possible.

6. Practice the Presentation

GOAL: Develop Oral Communication Skills in French Upon completion and return of the package, your child will present their 3D monster to their peers. Please help your child practice presenting the creation to you, ensuring that they appropriate hold the creation so the audience can see, and trying to speak loudly and clearly. You can use the lexicon to help you child use as much French as possible in their speech. Please refer to the rubric below as this is the format in which your child will be evaluated for their presentation.
1 I can do this with help from Mlle throughout the entire presentation. 2 I can do this with help from Mlle during most of my presentation. 3 I can do this with occasional reminders or prompts from Mlle. 4 I can do this without any assistance.

I have mastered the content and topic of my presentation. I look at the audience. I hold my project for everyone to see. I use correct French vocabulary. I speak in complete sentences using stems like Cest or Il y a. I am loud enough to hear and speak clearly. I got the attention of the audience. I can speak about my project for about 1-2 minutes before answering questions. I have followed the instructions of the assignment.
