I.

Distributive property: Multiplying or adding a number by breaking the factors into addends by place value group. Ex: 6x49 =294 = 6x (40) + 6x (9) = 294 Associative prop. of mult. / add. : Changing the grouping of numbers in an equation. Ex: 4+5+(5+2)= 16 = 4+(5+5)+2=16 Commutative Prop. of Addition/Multiplication: Rearranging the sequence of numbers in a problem. Ex multiplication: 4 x 3 x 2 x 4=96 = 3 x 2 x 4 x 4=96 Ex addition: 3 + 4 + 6 + 7=20 = 7 + 4 + 6 + 3=20

II. Steps to simplifying the expression 4(7x 3) + 2x Multiply the numbers in the parenthesis by 4: 4 x 7x= 28x 3 x 4=12 Put 28x and 12 into the expression: 28x 12 + 2x Combine like terms: 28x + 2x= 30x This is the simplest form: 30x 12

III. Steps to solve 7x 10 9x = -13 First combine like terms: 7x 9x = -2x Add 10 to both sides of the equation: -10 + 10 = 0 -13 + 10 = -3 Get rid of 2 by dividing each side of the equation by 2: 2x / 2 = x -3/2 = -1.5 Right the final solution X = -1.5 IV. Steps to solve 5x/6 + x/3 = 11/6 Turn all the numbers into whole numbers by taking the amount of times the denominator of each number goes into 6, and multiplying it by the numerator 6/6= 1 1 x 5x = 5x 6/3 = 2 2 x X = 2x 6/2=3 3 x 1= 3 6/6 = 1 1 x 11 = 11 Rewrite the problem using the whole numbers 5x + 2x 3 = 11 Combine like terms 5x + 2x = 7x Add 3 onto both sides of the equation -3 + 3 = 0 11 + 3 = 14 Get rid of seven by dividing both sides of the equation by 7 7x/7 = x 14/7 = 2 X=2

V. Steps to solve and graph the inequality 2 < x/-5 Get rid of the -5 by multiplying both sides of the inequality sign by -5 2 x -5 = -10 x/-5 x -5 = x Switch the direction of the inequality sign -10 > x Switch the numbers around so the variable is on the left X < -10 Graph

-10 VI. -4x + 4 > -8 Take four away from both sides of the equation 44=0 -8 4 = -12 Divide both sides of the equation by -4 -4x/4 = x -8/-4 = 2 Switch the direction of the inequality sign X<2 Graph 2 VII. A closed when graphing inequalities means that the number you are graphing is part of the solution set. An open circle means the number you are graphing is not part of the solution set. A closed circle is used when the

number is less than, greater than, OR EQUAL TO the variable sign on the other side of the inequality sign. An open circle is used when the number is less than or greater than the variable on the other side of the inequality sign. VIII. 12x < 13.3 She must work at least 14 weeks. 160 12x/12 = x x < 13.3 160/12 = 13.3

25 < B/3 25 X 3 = 75 75 <B b> 75 B/3 X 3 = B

75 Brother worked more than 75 minutes on homework.

n/3 36 < 22 174 -36 + 36 = 0 n/3 x 3 = n n<174 22 + 36 = 58 58 x 3 =174
