Parent-Teacher conferences are a great time for us to focus on how our students Glow and Grow during the school year. Fall conferences help us get acquainted with parents and present the students strengths and weaknesses as we set goals for the school year. Many parents sent in a conference request form and we will be in contact via phone or email; students also have a written evaluation of their learning strengths.

Gifted Math in Grandview Heights

3rd Grade: We have been looking at pattern and rules for groups of numbers. Students are using clues to figure out why numbers are grouped, then applying this knowledge to create new groups. For example, students notice that a pinkaloo is a group of three numbers where the sum of two numbers equals the last. The students also used clues to determines pictures created with attribute blocks including area and geometric vocabulary. 4th Grade: We have been examining a variety of multiplication strategies for multi-digit whole numbers times a single digit number. These include using the distributive property (partial products), factors, and doubling and halving. Students learned mental math computational skills such as multiplying by powers of ten and learning their teens times tables. We have looked at number patterns when considering divisibility rules. We are applying these rules to concepts involving factors and multiples and later will use the rules as a tool to aid in long division. 5th Grade: Students continue to complete advanced, multi-step problems from the Continental Mathematics League. We have had some wonderful small group discussions about problem solving strategies and critical thinking. We will be competing with a 6-question test in Early November. Mrs. Petit has put together an excellent challenge/thinking box in her room; it includes complex problems for students to work on independently.

5thA and 6th Grade: We are in the process of finishing up Unit 3: Operations with Fractions. Overall, students were very successful, but I encourage them to keep practicing complex problems including division with mixed numbers. Fifth Grade advanced students are working on a fraction project that will be finished and presented in early November. For Unit 4 we will begin our investigation of integers. 6th grade standards include basic understanding of the meaning of integers with ordering and comparing numbers with negative values. Challenge packets will include operations with integers (7th grade standard) so students can apply their knowledge of negative values through problem solving. Negative numbers will be a reoccurring concept in future challenge activities.

Gifted Reading in Grandview Heights

3rd Grade: The students have begun reading books written by Andrew Clements and have a Book Bag filled withtheir book, a calendar of important dates, and questions to prepare for class discussions. They are Reading Detectives on a Scavenger Hunt for significant vocabulary and literary elements in the text. 4th Grade: Students continue to focus on character development and theme, using short selections from the Jacobs Ladder Reading Comprehension series and self-selected chapter books. They have lots of enrichment activities on their Its Learning course. 5th Grade: Students are persevering with challenging texts in fifth grade. One recent afternoon found us analyzing a poem by Emily Dickinson and considering authors meaning and figura tive language. An addition to their Its Learning course is called Word Roots, a study of Greek and Latin words that are foundations for our language. 6th/7th Grade: Students in the Extended Core class are reading either The Book Thief or Enders Game as we prepare to compare the print and film versions of the story. Budding book reviewers and film critics abound in our classroom! We are starting a Community Service Project called Read to Feed, sponsored by Heifer International. This will take place during November and December. Please visit your childs Its Learning course to view assignments and enrichment choices. Here are the easy access steps: 1. URL is https://ghcsd.itslearning. 2. Your child can log in using school information. 3. On the Dashboard, click on Courses to find both the grade level course (lessons) and one titled Grundey-Reading Enrichment Choices.

Reminder: Game Day on Fridays, 2:30-3:30 in EIMS library. (Lots of fun board games to play with friends! Please join us.)
