MONDAY
With the holidays right around the corner, it is time to talk food safety! Blunders in the kitchen can lead to more than just serving unsatisfactory food to your guests; it can also mean foodborne illness. Keep your family and friends safe this year by practicing proper food safety techniques. Here are a few helpful tips for a safe Thanksgiving: Clean: the first rule of safe food preparation in the home is to keep everything clean. Wash your hands for 20 seconds with warm water and soap before and after handling food. Clean any foodcontact surface with hot and soapy water before going on to the next item. Separate: even after youve cleaned your hands and surfaces thoroughly, raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs can still spread illness-causing bacteria to readyto-eat foodsunless you keep them separate. Cook: food is safely cooked when it reaches a high enough internal temperature to kill harmful bacteria. Do not rely on color as an indicator of food being cooked. Use a thermometer to ensure foods are cooked to safe internaltemperatures. Chill: Refrigerate foods quickly because harmful bacteria grow rapidly at room temperature. Refrigerate any type of foods that should be kept cold within 2 hours this includes pumpkin pie!
