The 12 Tips for Christmas

MONDAY
Holidays are times for family gatherings and festive goodies! Avoid gaining weight this holiday season by following these 12 tips:
1. Avoid going to a party hungry. Eat something light before the party to reduce your chances of snacking on high calorie foods. 2. Dont try to lose weight over the holiday season just maintain your current weight. 3. Watch your portion sizes. Use a smaller plate instead of a dinner plate, this way you are sure to eat less without having to miss out on your favorite foods! 4. Offer to bring a favorite lowcalorie dish (roasted or fresh veggies, hummus, fruit, etc.) to holiday parties so you can enjoy it! 5. Maintain your regular exercise program throughout the holidays. 6. Eat slowly! It takes your stomach 20 minutes to realize it is full. 7. Leave fresh fruit around the house to reduce the urge to snack on holiday sweets. 8. Lighten up your favorite recipes by using lowfat substitutions to decrease the calorie and fat content: substitute oil or butter with applesauce, use lowfat canned evaporated milk, lemon and light vinaigrettes to flavor foods. 9. Load your plate with healthy options first. Choose some lean turkey or ham and vegetable s for your first plateful. This will take the edge off your appetite, and then you can have some higher calorie options when you're ready for seconds and are already somewhat full. 10. After the party, send leftovers home with friends, or package them into meals and freeze for later. 11. If you buy readymade foods, read the nutritional information for the lowestcalorie, lowestfat choices. 12. Watch the extra calories from beverages. Remember juice, soda, and eggnog add calories. Try and choose water, seltzers, or drinks with fewer calories.
