Artifact Reflection Artifact Title: Classroom Management Plan Date: Fall 2013 ARTIFACT DESCRIPTION

This shows a classroom management plan I came up with using the IRIS website for help. In the classroom management plan there is a purpose, rules, consequences and a conclusion. Also, within most sections I give a short paragraph on how this will be used within my classroom. During my pre-student teaching I was able to use my classroom management plan when giving a couple lessons. ALIGNMENT REFLECTION

Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment Standard 5 is Environment: Teachers know how to manage a classroom. The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation. I chose standard 5 because during my pre-student teaching I have had to make sure the students are on task and working. I helped the students transition from their normal teacher to a long-term sub during the second quarter. This put a lot of the classroom management skills that I have to the test. A week into the second quarter, I started to notice some of the students having a difficult time transitioning. I could tell that some of the students were accepting the changes but others were not. At the end of the first week and start of the second week I started teaching lessons to the class. I could tell that some of the students began to get more engaged and were not struggling as much as the first couple of days. By being able to see the curriculum and know what was ahead in the unit, I was able to use this to my advantage. There was a big project with projectile motion that the students were able to create their own projectile firing system. I knew that a lot of the students were extrinsic learners and needed to work towards a goal. So, I told them about the large project and if we could get through the next couple of weeks they would be able to start building their systems. I saw a lot of ears perk up and I also got a lot of questions right away from the students asking about what they could possibly do, what we were going to fire, and what were the limitations that they could have. I could tell that a lot of the students wanted to get started on this right away and want to make the best firing system they could.

One of my biggest goals in my classroom management is to make sure that my students are always busy doing something with the time that I have them. This could be anything from writing down notes during lecture days, or working in groups on a project or even exploring and problem solving what went wrong or what could go wrong. After this short unit the students worked on building their own vehicle with a partner to go as fast and straight as possible. Once they designed and tested their vehicle I asked them to reflect on what they could do to improve their vehicle. The more students are engaged in my class the less time that they will have to goof around and cause trouble. Another big aspect to my classroom management plan is to keep my classroom a lab based class. This way I will be able to get my students engaged and working with one another. The more time that they spend working with people the better they will become at learning how to compromise and also learn about what characteristics they have as an individual. This also allows me to go around to the different groups and give them advise, raise questions that they may have not thought of, and just get to know my students on a better level. I will also be able to keep tabs on where students are and possibly have other students help me, that are excelling with the project, with the students that are struggling. UW Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Alignment KSD2.b Establishes a Culture for Learning: The candidate can create a classroom environment that establishes and maintains high expectations for all students to value content of course work, take pride in work by initiating improvements, and help peers. Going back to my philosophy of teaching, students need to be in control of how they learn and I am more of a facilitator. I will be there to set the expectations and the rules of the classroom but it is up the students to maintain the high expectations that I set for them and also do the best that they can possibly do. By being a lab-based classroom I will be able to push the students that need a little push to do their best work and encourage them to help one another if they are moving faster along then the rest of the class. Secondary KSD Alignment KSD2.c. Manages Classroom Procedures KSD2.d. Manages Student Behavior KS2.e. Organizes Physical Space What I learned about teaching/learning: Since taking over the class I have realized that it is important to get the students engaged and on board with my classroom expectations and goals right away. The long that it takes students to understand what I want out of them and what their expectations of me are the less engaged the students will become. I was also able to see how well keeping students involved with something during the whole class time is. It is important to follow through with keeping students involved bell to bell otherwise students begin to act out and that is

when the issues begin to come up. What I learned about myself as a prospective educator: I must set guidelines for my students. I must first show them what being inclusive and accepting looks like within the classroom. I want the students to leave my room knowing they are safe there and surrounded by people who care for them. Also, throughout writing this management plan I learned the order in which should be taken when there are conduct issues within the classroom. I learned about different types of consequences both positive and negative that I had not known of before. While teaching the class I have been able to apply my classroom management plan to a class and see how well it has worked. There are a couple of things that I would like to change about the layout of the room, like making group tables instead of rows but there is only so much I can do with a classroom that I dont have complete control over. I have also learned how much I will be able to grow and learn during my student teaching experience by just getting a little taste of teaching this one class.
