Characterizations are the methods by which storytellers reveal the traits of characters.

Socratic Seminar - Students will participate in a class


discussion about chapter 1. They will be encouraged to asked questions about the text and answer those questions by
citing evidence to support their answers. Specifically ask students these questions to start the seminar:

What does the term theme mean? How is it deferent from main idea?
Based on what you read, what do you think the theme of the book will be?
What are the character traits of the main character?
How do you think the character will impact the story? Would the story be different if there was a different main character?

r Whole Group Instruction Indirect Character Traits Students will define character traits and write

examples of what characters with those traits might do.


r Characterization Chart Students will work as a class to look through chapters 1-4 to find passages that provide
character traits about the Time Traveller and place them on the chart on the following page along with the
corresponding page numbers. The teacher will lead a class discussion where each students provides one example for
the class.

r Independent Practice (Exit ticket) . Characterization Chart Continued

Students will
work to complete the Characterization Chart on their own. They must provide two examples for each category.

r Extended Practice (Homework) Cornell Notes Students will read Chapter 2 and prepare

Cornell Notes containing at least 20 essential questions for a Socratic Seminar. They will also complete
unfinished classwork
