Clear and specific objectives need to be in mind. Create mixed teams based on ability, gender, and ethnicity to better round out the diversity of the group. A variety of study materials can be used. These study materials should require clearly correct or incorrect answers. STAD should allow students to have the equal opportunity for success, despite their abilities, gender, or ethnic background. Their efforts should be recognized. A base score is the students average on past tests and quizzes, so their improvement score should root from that and be awarded to the student if their score is higher than their base score.

The teacher must review, introduce the lesson, explain and model the content and have the students practice while the teacher monitors their efforts. Phase 1 is where the teacher explains the skill and models it in a whole-group setting. Then the students move from whole-group instruction and prepare for team study. Then students practice performing academic skills. Then improvement points and team awards are given. Team scoring will be based on the improvement of individual members.

The most basic form of assessment, as with any other strategy, would be in the form of a quiz or test. The teacher can assess whether the students are learning personal responsibility and can function as productive teams. Questions to think about when assessing the group: -Are all members contributing? -Are some members dominating? -Is the group interaction positive and supportive? -Do boys and girls contribute equally? -Are members from different racial and ethnic groups participating and being included? Assess the extent of the student experts and how they are explaining content clearly as they would expect to be for their age range. The teachers personal checklists, notes and rating scales would also be a way of assessing the students.

Students will be motivated to earn improvement points by giving them the incentive of rewarding them with extra points based on how well they do and their average grade. Grouping students into well balanced teams helps motivate them to work together, especially if they know that they have a personal responsibility to take care of. The personal responsibility often motivates the students especially if they are receiving credit or a grade for it.

So what? What is important to understand about this?

STAD allows students to have the opportunity to work as a group to develop social skills as well as accomplish certain specific objectives that are set by the teacher. STAD allows students to work together to learn a skill and help their teammates in understanding the skill, like certain math processes .
