Present PowerPoint based on the one Dr. Haralson created for EDUC 556 with appropriate edits and substitutions of sample sites to suit the 7th grade level. Open sample sites and pause to have the students evaluate it according to the criteria just presented in the slides. The criteria include Authority, Accuracy, Objectivity, Timeliness, and Scope. Put particular emphasis on the clues provided by the extensions: .com; .org; .edu; .gov; and .html. Discuss additional challenges to keep in mind while doing Web research. Web sites (assigned previous week during lesson on Symbolism) and have them evaluate each using an evaluation sheet I hand out. Based on what they have learned, ask them to rate the sites for each criteria based on a scale of 1 to 3; with 1 being the lowest score. Be sure the slide handouts are glued into the students interactive notebooks for future reference. Emphasize that they will be using Internet research to complete projects for Mrs. Mcs English class during the rest of the year, so these critical thinking skills are important to practice.
