Directors Note

44 Plays is like Minnesota weather: you dont have to wait long for something different! The piece really is 44 short plays, written by members of the Neo-Futurists, a Chicago ensemble of playwrights and performers. When colleague Jennifer Thomas learned about the 44 Plays Festival, we jumped at the chance to produce the play at Concordia.

The playwrights are known for performances of ultra-short pieces30 plays in 60 minutesperformed late-night in a tiny, sketchy Chicago-land theatre. Randomness, chaos, improvisation and fun imbue every aspect of the night, from ticket prices (you pay $5 plus the roll of one die) to reward for the successful conclusion of a performance (an actor orders pizzaone pizzafor the audience, who simultaneously shout out favorite toppings). The plays are widely divergent, including traditional dialogue, personal monologues, and general silliness, such as a play titled The Audience Gets Wet in which the performers spray the crowd with squirt guns. The 44 Plays for 44 Presidents national festival has brought together 44 theatre companies to produce the play this Fall. Each theatre selects a president (we have #9 William Henry Harrison), makes a film of that play, sends it in, and the national 44 Plays Festival will compile them. We are thrilled that our work will be shown alongside college and university theatres, community theatres, and professional companies. And were thrilled to share it with you! Dont be surprised when this performance is a little different from what youre used toafter all, it really is 44 different 2-minute plays, one for each president. We hope you enjoy yourself and maybe learn something. And this November, when our nation again selects our president, pleasedont neglect to vote!
