Topic of Lesson: Relating Addition and Subtraction

What standards did you plan to demonstrate with this video? During this lesson, I was able to cover the following two standards: Common Core Standards (Mathematics) 1. 1.OA.6: Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as.using the relationship between addition and subtraction EEDA State Standards Learning to Work 2. Standard 4-4: Students will demonstrate a positive attitude toward work and the ability to work together. Indicator 4.2: Demonstrate cooperative work habits in a group.

Describe the degree to which you accomplished your goal: At the beginning of the lesson, I introduced the concept of using addition to help with subtraction by using a video. It reviewed the vocabulary word related facts and used an addition number sentence to introduce how to use the same numbers to find two relating subtraction facts. For example, the addition number sentence 4+3=7 can be used to find the difference in the subtraction fact 7-3=? Next, I had the students work in groups to think of an addition story using linked cubes within 10. Each group had a spokesperson to tell the groups story. I wrote a corresponding number sentence to represent each story. Next, I asked each group to think of a subtraction story using the same numbers they used in their addition story. After I wrote each groups subtraction story on the board, we discussed how each groups number sentences were similar and different. After this activity, I modeled the addition and subtraction story that was on the students worksheet. I used an oversized work mat on the board to work out each story and wrote the corresponding number sentences on the board for each student to see. At the end of the lesson, I was able to walk around the room and help individually with the students that needed additional instruction to comprehend the concept of using addition to help with subtraction.

Self-Analysis of My Teaching: How were you successful? What can you improve? I believe that I was successful in addressing this concept because each student was able to actively participate in coming up with an addition and subtraction story in their group. They also have the opportunity to manipulate counters while they worked on relating addition facts to subtraction facts at their desk. One other reason I feel that I was successful was the results that I received at the end of the lesson. The students were given an exit slip to complete. The exit slip had an addition number sentence and they were asked to write one subtraction fact that related to that fact. For example, they were given 4+3=7 and they could have written 7-4=3 or 7-3=4. One way that I could improve in this lesson would be to have an additional day in which the students could explore different addition facts and find relating subtraction facts for each fact.
