1. Plan for whole-group instruction: Have clear learning objectives, make great examples, and promote group interaction. 2. Organize groups: Make sure the groups are well diverse and have the appropriate number of members. 3. Plan for team study: Provide the students with team study materials to guide them along. 4. Calculate base scores and improvement points: Calculate students base scores and give them improvement points when they show improvement in their performances.

There are 4 phases: 1. Instruction: Teach students a skill in a whole group lesson. 2. Transition to Teams: Have the students break up into their assigned groups. 3. Team Study: Students now practice the academic skill that they were just taught. 4. Recognizing Achievement: Assign improvement points and team awards.

Assessing in STAD is a two-step process. First you watch them while in groups to see how well they work together, make sure everyone is participating, and respect is shown in the group. Second, you see how well they do on the assignments given afterward and see if they surpassed their base score and assign improvement points.

While using STAD, there is a lot of motivation for students. First off, students can receive improvement points for performing better than their average. Secondly, they have the opportunity to work in groups. Finally, with the incentive of team awards, competition will be strong in the classroom as each group strives to outperform the other groups.

So what? What is important to understand about this?

STAD is a strategy where students get to practice in groups an academic skill that they were just taught, and they are given the incentives of improvement points and team awards to perform remarkably.
