Nonverbal Lesson Plan

What constitutes around 93% of the information we give and receive? Have you ever made an instant judgment about a person, without ever speaking to him or her? Can you tell when people are worried, afraid, or angry? This is all nonverbal. Research suggests that very little of our communication is actually verbal.

What is nonverbal comm? Definition Co-constructed: simply means that the messages exchanged in communication are not embedded in the language used but are created by people interacting within a particular context from within each persons frame of reference. o As a matter of fact much of our understanding of what is happening in our communication with another is not dependent on language at all It is, to a large degree, the result of our interpretation of all the nonverbal aspects of the event. In other words you cannot not communicate o You can try, but that very act of trying not to communicate, does in fact, communicate o Silence communicates o Even Absence communicates Anything you do, or do not do, has the potential to communicate if someone attaches a meaning to it

Haptics o Study of touching behavior Positive affect touch used to express positive emotions such as support, appreciation., inclusion, affection Playful touch includes playful affection and playful aggression Control touch used to gain compliance, get attention, or announce a specific response Ritualistic touch such as a greeting or a departure Hybrid touch which shows either greeting or departure affection Instrumental touch related to performing ones task, such as touch used by healthcare providers Accidental touch which occurs completely by accident o So, what type do you think high fives fall under? Chronemics o The study of how we conceptualize, arrange, and use time o The way we use time is often dependent upon our perceptions of our relationship with another person, and it also communicates those perceptions to others. Example of candidate for a romantic relationship vs. established friend (being punctual) o Question: How does tardiness of a friend impact you? Artifacts o One of the most consciously manageable forms of nonverbal communication is found in our artifacts. o Consider your clothing and accessories and the messages they convey to others. Youre communicating yourself to others by displaying these artifacts. o Shoes What messages do these shoes send about their owners? Paralanguage o Youve probably heard someone say that her understanding of something was not because of what was said but because of how it was said o This means the combination of the aspects of voice production that accompany spoken language, and which may enhance or modify the meaning of the words uttered. o Categorized by the 4 chief attributes of the human voice Pitch relative highness or lowness of a vocal tone as it occurs on a musical scale Rate measured by number of words uttered per minute, also notes pausing. (people talking too slow or too fast) Volume relative softness or loudness of a speaking voice.
