Learning Environment: A. Classroom Management: Activities that I will use to develop a positive climate where students will feel like valued members of a learning community: At the beginning of the year, I will establish a set of rules for the classroom. Students will be actively involved in creating these rules. I will have each student create a rule that they feel should be enforced. I will collect each students rule and we will vote as a class which rules will stand. These rules will reinforce safety in the classroom and will remain the same throughout the year. Another way that I plan to create a positive learning community for my students will be to start each day with a Morning Meeting. These meetings will give each student a chance to share their opinion on a topic or a previous experience of their choice. The purpose of these meetings will be to ensure that each student has a positive experience with getting involved in classroom discussion. 3-5 behavioral expectations or rules for all students in my classroom: 1. Always show respect to other people and their belongings. 2. Come to class prepared to learn something new each day. 3. Always try hard and do your best work. 4. Follow directions the first time they are given. 5. Listen closely while the teacher or other students are speaking. The hierarchy of consequences that I will follow when infractions of the rules occur in the classroom. For minor infractions: 1st offense: Verbal warning 2nd offense: Loss of privilege (Recess, Class Party, etc.) 2nd offense: Note to parent 3rd offense: Phone call home 4th offense: Visit to principal/guidance counselor If the behavior is severe and may jeopardize the safety of the student or others: I will immediately call the office and request assistance from the principal or another faculty member. Intrinsic reinforcements that I will utilize in the classroom are: -Praise -Verbal positive feedback -Positive notes on paper -Thumbs up motion to student

Extrinsic reinforcements that I will utilize in the classroom are: -Extra computer time -Use the teachers chair for the day -Write with a special pen for the day -Trip to the treasure box (box full of goodies) -Class parties (after so many class compliments) For students who are following the rules and demonstrating appropriate behaviors, I will give them verbal praise in front of the class. I will show their behavior as a positive example of what I am expecting from the entire class. I will refer this example back to the rules chart. For example, John has come to class prepared to learn today. He is also showing respect for his neighbors by sharing his markers.

B. Non-Instructional Routines and Procedures To begin class, I will have morning expectations. Each student should come in, mark their lunch choice on the bathroom door and sign the survey chart for the day. After finishing these jobs, they will take their book bag to the designated tub for book bags. I will have student helpers each day that will collect and distribute materials and work that students need for the day. I will assign these helpers by drawing names each afternoon. These students will know who they are before the next day when their job begins. I will have a homework folder that students will take home each afternoon and return each morning. These folders will also hold important documents or letters that parents need to see and sign. At the beginning of the year, students will know my expectations for routine tasks such as pencil sharpening and bathroom breaks. They will need to motion with their hands that it is an emergency during instructional time and seek my permission. However, during non-instructional times, students will have permission to sharpen their pencil and visit the bathroom, as long as it doesnt become a habit or a problem. I will expect students to be on their best behavior while in the hallway. Because this will be a school-wide expectation, I will ensure that students are very familiar with hallway procedures such as; walking in a straight line, remaining quiet, and walking at an appropriate pace. They should be looking ahead and all times and refrain from touching on the walls. I will let my students know that our behavior in the hallway reflects us as a class and we should demonstrate a behavior that will make others proud of us. During emergency situations, I will do a head count before taking any further steps. After ensuring that each student is in the classroom and under my supervision, I will follow the schools routine procedures for fire or tornado drills. At the beginning of the year, I will review these procedures with students and we will practice. Emergency drills will be a topic for one of our morning meetings.
