We are going to be learning a new letter today, lets see if you guys can guess what our letter is today. Play the K video from Starfall.com. Stop on first screen after it introduces the letter k.

Learning Design: I. Teaching: What letter do you think we are learning today? Allow students to answer. Thats right. The letter k. This is the letter k. Tap on the letter on the Promethean board so that it says k. What letter is this? Allow the students to answer. Great job. Can you all say k? Allow the students to say k together. What letter is this J? Point to the letter and allow J to answer. What letter is this G, T, D? Point to the letter for each student, one at a time and allow him or her time to answer. This is the letter K. K says /k/. Tap the k again so that it says its name. What sound does k make? Allow students to answer. What sound does K make J, G, T, D? Call on each student individually and allow him or her to answer, pressing the letter after they say the sound. Play the rest of the starfall video. Allow the students to press the next arrow when necessary. What letter is this? Hold up the letter K on a note card. Allow the students to answer. What sound does this letter make? Allow the students to answer. Thats right. K says /k/. Which letter is the letter k. Place an S, A, and K on the ground and give the students time to point to the letter k. Lets look at some words that begin with k. Take out K box filled with items that start with the letter K. Walk through each item naming the item. This is a kite. Kite starts with k. /k/ kite. Continue until you have gone through all of the items. Now we are going to write the letter k. Go to hwtears.com and play the video while you explain how to write the letter k. To write the letter k you draw a big line down, a little line down, and another little line down. Now lets try to write this. You are going to get to practice this in just a minute, but first I want you to watch what Ms. Vestri does. Trace the letter K on the Promethean board. Talk through what you are doing as you trace. Big line down, little line down, little line down. Now you may try. When you are using the promethean board are you going to be rough and scribble all over the board or are you going to be gentle and use it correctly? Very good. I am going to be watching that you are doing a good job using our technology. I am going to pick someone who is sitting very nicely. Call on student who is sitting paying attention. Great listening, you may come trace our letter. Help the student trace the letter. Talk through what he is doing as he traces. Big line down, little line down, little line down.

Great work. I am going to pick someone else who is sitting nicely. Do the same thing with this student and the remaining students, until everyone has gotten a turn. Good job. Now, lets write the letter k on your paper. We are going to practice with this paper in just a minute, but first, I want everyone to trace the K and write one more K beside it. Monitor the students work ensuring that each student is doing it correctly. Great work! I think you are ready for some practice writing the letter k by yourself.

II. Opportunity for Practice: Now, lets do some practice with what we just learned. Each of you are going to continue to write the letter k. You may take this back to your desk and do your best work. Give students time to go back to their desk and complete the letter k worksheet. Walk around and assist the students as needed. Good job! Who would like to show us their hard work? Allow each student to hold up their paper and show the class their hard work. III. Assessment: You have done a great job learning about the letter k. Now, I want to see just how much you have learned. You are each going to be given a piece of paper. The first two lines have different letters on them. I want you to circle the K in this line and this line. Point to the top lines as you speak. Then I want you to write the letter K. You may write it under the K here or next to it. Point to the options as you speak. You may trace the letter first if you would like Give the students time to complete the assessment. Great work. You can all come back to the carpet with your paper. What letter did you write J? Ask each student what letter they wrote and which letter is the letter K. Great job! You have learned a lot today and I can tell that you know how to write the letter k. IV. Closure: Great work. Before we are done, what letter is this? Hold up the letter k. Good job. Can you tell your buddy what letter we learned today? Give students time to turn and talk. Thank you for being such good listeners and working so hard. Now we are going to walk back to your desk and wait for Ms. Chapple to give you instructions.
