Germain Revised Genre Analysis Rugby is a hooligans sport played by gentlemen. They come together to work, sacrifice, and play together to achieve one common goal. That goal of course is to win. Another secondary goal is to come together and be on functional and happy community. But what is a community without certain types of genres to communicate to the team members and coaches. The two most highly important genres in the rugby game is social networks like Facebook and of course the pitch which is the center of the sport. The Facebook page of the University of North Carolina Charlotte Rugby is very important to the club. It is the primary communication to all members of meetings, practices, and updates. It is crucial for every member to be part of the page for without it members would be out of the circle and lost. The second, and equally important, genre would be the pitch or field where the rugby members come together for meetings and practices to become better. When these two genres come together a special and active community is formed. The information passed through the Facebook page is relayed and reflected on the pitch. Facebook is a social network widely known to everyone. Its a great source to share info and update people about events, personal matters, and etc The importance of Facebook for the Rugby club is to keep members informed and updated. Its quick and easy to check with a scan of a phone or an internet device. Since Facebook isnt formal as other communications, its easy to use slang terms and shortened sentencing to get the point across faster. An example could be ETA for practice @ rec field 12 6:30 Tue. This genre is very effective to the rugby club. First

of all it is private and only available to members so you know the information is correct and resourceful. Second its backed up by comments left by members under the original post. One such comment would say cant make it to practice guys, have a test to study for. This not only confirms that the member saw the post but allows him to share to the rest of the club his status on the post. In general this Facebook page is the rugby clubs main source of communication. Its quick, efficient, and reliable. Also it helps our goal of winning by pulling everyone together and keeping people informed. Without the Facebook page the team would be lost and in total chaos when it comes down to game time or anything important revolving around winning or taking steps to winning. The next genre is an unlikely one. The rugby pitch, or field, is where practices, meetings, and other important social events are held. The pitch is a very important genre and the home to the rugby club. It is only used by rugby players and played on by the rugby players. Every club member knows when he needs to be there thanks to the previous genre mentioned. The amount of time spent on this pitch is vast. It could be used for a mere 30 minutes to up to three hours. What is done with that time is of great importance. Of course they use it to practice and become a better team. But more importantly it is where face to face communication happens. The information being shared is of course legit since it coming from a member or a coach since they are the only ones allowed on the pitch. Next is the response. The response is immediate. If a member has dues or any fines they must pay, it will be done when asked of them at the pitch. The support or reason behind this genre is seen as a team. The whole team responds and reacts therefore if one member does not do their duty to the club it is easily identified and fixed by the team. The way the club meets is very organized. Every member knows that practices are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30. If any other event is related to the pitch then it will

again be shared via Facebook. At the pitch a certain language or vocabulary is used. Words that dont have any relative meaning do once a member is at the pitch. An example would be the word ruck. Having two meanings this words comes to be very important in rugby. When playing the game it means protect the team. And when not playing it means we are one. Over all looking at the rugby filed being a genre of its own can be strange. But when one digs deeper they find it is a tight genre that is shared by all members of the community. This pitch helps achieve the teams goals more than anyone can imagine. The team is undefeated on this pitch and will continue to keep it that way. That is the mind set and the belief of every rugby player on this team. They learn and spill everything they got to earn the W on their record on this pitch. The pitch is home to glory and the glory is winning. Looking at these two highly important genres, which one is of more importance. Its almost like asking what came first, the chicken or the egg? Now many would argue the field is of importance. They are not entirely wrong but of course the Facebook page is the more important genre in a situation involving the community as a whole. The Facebook page is available at any time unlike the pitch. Furthermore the Facebook page is where the planning or construction of what is to be done on the pitch and off the pitch. All members can be reached through the page and it is of quick and easy access to most members. The Facebook page for the North Carolina Charlotte Rugby Club is the stitching that brings every member together and the final product is what is seen on the pitch. The pitch is where the work is seen. The overall goal of winning is determined on the pitch and whether or not the players gave enough is determined by practices every Tuesday and Thursday on the pitch. Genres play a major role in any discourse community. It is the foundation or structure of the community. Without genres communities would cripple and fall. Without this team could never achieve their goal. Winning is the only

finish line that rugby players see. If not they see themselves as failures and will give everything to make the next year different than the disappointing one they had to go through the previous year.
