Lesson Plan: Cyberbullying, Crossing the Line (Grades 9 12)

1. VSCA Standards: HP3. Use appropriate communication and conflict resolution skills with peers and adults, and HP4. Apply problem solving and decision making skills to make safe and healthy choices. 2. Specific Topic Being Addressed: Defining, recognizing, protecting yourself from and reacting to cyberbullying. 3. Purpose of Lesson: To assist students in defining cyberbullying, recognizing how it is different from bullying, becoming knowledgeable on the effects of bullying for both the victim and bully, how to prevent cyberbullying and how to appropriately respond if it is happening to them or one of their friends. This lesson will be delivered as a part of a series on bullying. 4. Three Objectives:

Students will be able to define cyberbullying and analyze online behaviors that cross the line. Students will learn about the various ways that a person can be cyberbullied, including flaming, deceiving, and harassing and the effects that bullying can have on both parties. Students will adopt the point of view of a teen who has been cyberbullied, and offer solutions while learning about a four step process to prevent and protect someone from cyberbullying.

5. Desired Long-term Outcome, with connection to Academics: Students will be better prepared to manage social and emotional issues related to bullying that occur both in and out of school. This skill will allow them to better focus in school and combat the common effects of bullying such as poor attendance, risky behavior, lower self-esteem, health issues and a drop in grades. 6. Materials Needed: Pre/Post Quiz, WellCast cyberbullying worksheet, laptop projector, PowerPoint, YouTube, whiteboards and markers. 7. Detailed Instructions: The session will begin with a Pre-session quiz. After the quiz is complete, the instructor will begin a series of discussion questions to gauge the students understanding of cyberbullying and the effect it has on their lives. After each discussion, the instructor will use PowerPoint to help add detail to the conclusions the class offers and define certain terms pertaining to cyberbullying. Next, the instructor will present two examples of cyberbullying and facilitate a discussion about whether or not these examples cross the line. The students will then be shown a video, Staceys Story When Rumors Escalate, they will be asked to split into their trios and reflect on how Stacey should handle the problem she talks about in the video. Lastly, students will be introduced to a four step process for preventing and reacting to cyberbullying. This will be shown through the video, How to Beat Cyberbullies, and discussed afterwards. We will offer a worksheet as a takeaway for the students that includes the four steps in detail for them to refer back to if needed. After the conclusion of the presentation, the instructor will administer the post-session quiz and ask some debriefing questions. 8.
