This lesson focuses on the identification of instrument families through the creation of a family concept.

Students compare and contrast different instruments by sight and sound to establish this concept. Strengths of this lesson plan include brainstorming ideas to create concepts, using aural examples to engage students in multiple learning styles, and reflecting on their definition of instrument families. Weaknesses include not providing enough nonexamples, teaching too many topics in one lesson, and not providing accommodations for different learners. Following the Concept Attainment model, the teacher introduces the lesson by explaining to the students that they will discover similarities and differences in instruments by looking and listening to them, for the first phase. During the second phase, students are presented with examples of different instruments, asking students to hypothesize different characteristics for each instrument family. For the third phase, discussion on how each instrument family is named will be conducted with the students, through the use of additional examples, to include listening to the different instruments. In the final phase of closure and application, the teacher reflects on the instrumental families with the students and instruments are categorized into families by the students with the help of the teacher. This lesson deviates from the model by not providing explicit nonexamples for the students to compare different instruments to. Instrumental families are defined within the second and third phases of the lesson, instead of the final closure phase where a hypothesis is supposed to be formed. For future lessons, comparing only two families of instruments at a time would be a better way to introduce examples and nonexamples to students. This could be repeated for all families in order to develop an overarching hypothesis of why certain instruments are classified in certain families. Closure could include examples of nonwestern instruments in order to assess understanding of the characteristics of different instrument families.
