Lesson # 1

Subject/Grade: Language Arts/ 1st Date and Time of Lesson: October 22, 2013 Learning Objective: Students will be able to successfully identify the correct amount of syllables in a word by
physically clapping out each segment of the word that will be selected from the text.

Alignment with Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy. RF.1.2- Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and
sounds (phonemes).

Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: The children have to count out the syllables in each word, which incorporates math. This makes this lesson developmentally appropriate because this enhances the students counting skills. Assessment(s) of the Objectives:
Lesson Objective(s) Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) Pre-Assessment- Students are told to return to their desks based on the number of syllables in their names. During-Assessment- Select a couple of words throughout the story to make sure the students are familiar with the method of counting out the syllables by clapping. Post-Assessment- Handout index cards with words from the book and see if each student can match the number of syllables in their word to the corresponding number on the chart. Assessment for Objective 2 Use of Formative Assessment Teach a lesson on how to break down spoken single-syllable words into their complete sequence of individual sounds.

Students will be able to successfully identify the correct amount of syllables in a word by physically clapping out each segment of the word that will be selected from the text.

Objective 2 (if applicable)

Accommodations: If children do not know how to pronounce the word, I will assist them in sounding out the word.
There will be no early finishers or slow pacers because this will be a group activity, and there is no independent work required.

Materials:

Procedures:

1.) Sit the students down on the carpet. 2.) Let them know that I will be reading to them for the day. 3.) Refer back to last week a. Remember when you were asked to return to your seats by counting the amount of syllables in your name? b. Today we will be doing an activity similar to what you were asked to do last week. 4.) Introduce the book a. Im going to be reading Creepy Carrots! 5.) Ask about the cover of the book and have the children make predictions about the story. a. What do you guys think this story is going to be about based on what you see? 6.) Tell the children to put their listening ears on because I will be asking them questions throughout the story. 7.) Begin reading the book. 8.) Ask the children to count the number of syllables in the main characters name. (Jasper) 9.) Pick two other words out of the story and allow the children to count the number of syllables in each word. 10.) After reading the book, handout the index cards with the different words on them. 11.) Allow the children to place their cards in the corresponding column. 12.) Once the children have this completed this, go over each word with the class. 13.) This will conclude the lesson and I will then hand over the class to Mrs. Koone. Activity Analysis:
The first activity would be the during-assessment. -This supports the lesson objective because it allows the children to become familiar with the actual clapping method. The second activity would be the post-assessment. (The actual placement of the index cards) - By the children placing the index cards in their proper column, this shows that they have mastered the clapping method. *For both activities, I made sure that it was simple enough for each child to understand and complete. *The activity that I want the children to complete requires no use of technology.
