Scoring Guide/ Rubric PORTFOLIO: Diary Entries: Write 5 diary entries as if you were one of the characters in the

play The Diary of Anne Frank and you were in their situations. These diaries must be at least a page long and show in depth thought about the character you chose. These can be written very informal but must portray characters thoughts and emotions. - 10pts: Included all entries, in depth entries longer than one page, can tell that student grasped character through entries. - 8pts: Included all entries, somewhat in depth entries, student somewhat showed knowledge of character. - 5pts: Didnt include all entries, of included entries showed depth, showed understanding of characters. - 3pts: Didnt include all entries, showed somewhat depth, showed somewhat understanding of characters. - 1pt: Didnt include all entries, showed no depth. Notes on Holocaust Speaker: See lesson - 5pts: Took good understandable notes, organized, clear demonstration of the difference between main points, and details. - 4pts: Took pretty good notes, somewhat organized, understood difference between main points and details. - 3pts: Took some notes, somewhat organized, had some confusion between main ideas and details. - 2pts: Barely took notes, poorly organized but legible, confused main ideas and details. - 1pts: Took one or two notes, unorganized, didnt show distinction between main ideas and detail. Character Analysis Worksheet: See Worksheet - 5pts: Understood character, had in depth supporting details about characters qualities. - 4pts: Understood character, had supporting details about characters qualities but lacked depth. - 3pts: Somewhat understood character, had supporting details about character qualities but didnt align with quality to the best of its ability. - 2pts: Somewhat understood character, but lacked in supporting details. - 1pt: Didnt understand character. Predictions Worksheet: See Worksheet - 5ts: Made observant predictions and provided solid supporting evidence to their reason for the prediction. - 4pts: Made observant predictions, supporting evidence lacked depth. - 3pts: Made predictions, but evidence wasnt supported by text but rather ones own opinion or personal experience. - 2pt: Made predictions, showed no supporting evidence at all - 1pt: Made predictions that had nothing to do with the text, or barely completed the assignment.

Making Connections Worksheet: See Worksheet - 5pts: Made interesting connections and explained the connections in depth. - 4 pts: Made interesting connections and explained them, but explanations lacked depth. - 3pts: Made weak connections, but had good supporting explanations - 2 pts: Made weak connections, and also had weak explanations - 1 pts: Made weak connections, and had no explanations Socratic Seminar Partner Assessment: See Worksheet -5 pts: Completed Worksheet -3 pts: Half way completed worksheet -1 pt: Barely completed worksheet Final Essay: This essay should be a formal essay about a character the story in whom you feel you identify the most with. The requirements for this essay include an introduction, conclusion and three body paragraphs that talk about specific character qualities you have in common, each body paragraph should be a different quality. The paragraphs should show strong supporting details and examples of those qualities in your self and the books. 10 pts: Introduction o 2pts: Creativity o 2pts: Organization o 2pts: Grammar/spelling o 2pts: Clear introduction of character chosen o 2pts: Clear summary of body paragraphs(qualities chosen) - 30 pts: Body Paragraphs (10 pts per paragraph) o 2pts: Organization o 2pts: Grammar/spelling o 2pts: Strong transitions in introductory sentence o 2pts: Explanation of character quality(definition) o 2pts: Strong supporting examples (specific details) - 10 pts: Conclusion o 2pts: Creativity o 2pts: Organization o 2pts: Grammar/spelling o 2pts: Strong summary of essay o 2pts: Strong concluding sentence/thought(this should tie the paper together) Presentation: Introduction of character: This should be just a quick introduction of character. It doesnt not have to written out or formal , but before the rest of the presentation introduce you name and the character you chose. This will be more of a participation grade if you say introduction you will receive 5 point no matter what, and 0 if not. -

Diary Entry: Pick your best diary entry and read this aloud to the class. For this portion of the presentation there will be 10 pts guaranteed for your participation. 15 pts: Read aloud diary entry very loud, clear, and confidently. Showed characters emotion while reading entry - 13: pts: Read aloud diary entry loud clear, and confidently. Did not show much of the characters emotion. - 10 pts: Read the diary entry aloud(YOU WILL RECEIVE 10 POINTS NO MATTER WHAT) Summary: This part of the presentation will be very similar to the diary entry. There will be automatic 10 points if this is read. The summary should be very brief but explain the character you chose, why you chose this character, and the three qualities that you and your character have in common. A good summary to use for this is your introduction. If the introduction is written well it will be a very effective summary. - 20 pts: Confident, loud, and clear summary that explained why you chose the character and what character qualities you share. - 17 pts: Timid, quiet speech but included all of the elements of a strong summary - 15 pts: Confident loud speech, but did not include all of the elements required in a good summary - 13 pts: Timid quiet speech, and did not include all of the elements required in summary. - 10 pts: The summary was given in presentation Personal item: This part of the presentation is very informal and more formal. I want you to bring in an item that treasure that would help you through hard times like the Holocaust and explain its meaning to you. This part will participation points so if you do this part you will have 5 points, if not points will not be given. Characters Personal Item: This item does not have to be brought in but I would like you to name an item that you think the character treasured and relied on during the Holocaust (for example: Annes diary) based off of their personality. Give examples for your reasoning. This will show me your interpretation of your chosen character and your understanding of him/her. This part will be participation as well, 5 points for presenting this component in presentation, and no points if not. This scoring guide may seem very intimidating but YOU CAN DO IT! I will be working with you every step of the way and I cant to see you final projects and the growth you will have from this experience.
