Murtha Lesson Plan November 6th, 2013 Doubles Grade 1 Purpose: This lesson is being taught so that students will be able know their addition double facts.

Vocabulary: 1. Double- Two of the same thing. 2. Addend- Any number used to get the sum or the total 3. Sum- The total or whole amount.

Objectives: I Students will be able to identify doubles. II. Students will be able to answer doubles addition sentences.

Standards: Math CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.A.1: Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.1

Reading Information Text Standard 1: Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a Machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.

Reading Standards: Foundational Skills Standard 3. Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

a. Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words. b. Know spelling-sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams. c. Decode regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowels. d. Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes. e. Identify words with inconsistent but common spelling-sound correspondences. f. Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.

Speaking and Listening Standard 1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.

Language Standard 1. Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. Standard 2. Ask and answer question about what a speaker says in order to gather additional information or clarify something that is not understood.

Pre-Assessment: Students have already been introduced and have been practicing the processes of addition and subtraction. They know how to count on from a number when adding numbers higher than 10. They also have been introduced to the concept of adding using a number line.

Lesson Plan Presentation: Set Induction: The teacher will have the students come to the carpet quietly. The teacher will inform the class if they are on their best behaviors they will be able to participate in the activities planned.

Procedure: 1. Begin a class discussion at the rug. The teacher will ask the question, Does anyone know what it means when you order a DOUBLE scoop of ice cream? It is when you order 2 scoops of the SAME ice cream.

2. The teacher will then show the class different examples of doubles addition sentences and non-doubles addition sentences. Quiet, listening students will come up to circle to addition sentences that show doubles.

3. Once all of the doubles addition sentences are circles, the teacher will have a student explain why the circled addition sentences are doubles ** Because they are adding TWO of the same number. ** 4. The teacher will then ask the class What are some ways that we can solve these doubles addition sentences? They will be reminded to think of the different ways they have been taught to solve addition problems. ** They can use a number line OR they can draw a picture. **

5. Once the class has come up with both of those two options, the teacher will model how they can use either one of those methods on two different doubles problems shown on the white board.

5. The teacher will emphasize that they must know their doubles facts in a SNAP. The teacher will tell the students they will be learning a doubles rap to help them learn and remember their doubles a. We will first watch/ listen to the rap as a class once or twice. b. We will then sing it, the teacher will say the line first and the class will follow. c. Once they know the words, they will also learn the movements to the rap.

6. The teacher will now inform the class that they will be going back to their seats to work with a partner to play a review game. They will be reminded of the proper way to play in their partnerships and if they misbehave they will have to complete a worksheet instead. 7. The teacher will break the class up into 3 differentiated groups. a. Group 1 (Low)- Students will be given a board with different answers for doubles up to 6 (Silly Monsters Board). They will pull different cards and have to know how to write the addition sentence. Once they write the sentence and find the sum they will need to color in the box with the correct sum. b. Group 2(Medium)- Students will be given a board with different answers for doubles up to 10 (Rainy Day). They will pull different cards and have to know how to write the addition sentence. Once they write the sentence and find the sum they will need to color in the box with the correct sum. c. Group 3 (High)- Students will be given a board with different answers for doubles up to 12. They will pull different cards and have to know how to write the addition sentence. Once they write the sentence and find the sum they will need to color in the box with the correct sum.

8. At the end the class will come together to discuss what they have learned, and review what a double is.

Materials and Resources: Paper and Pencil/ Pen- to write addition sentences during game. Smartboard- to present the first portion of the interactive lesson. Game boards and numbers- To play their review game. Poster- Where the doubles rap is written.

Follow-Up Activity or Assignment: The students will need to finish the assignment they were doing during class.

Evaluation/Assessment: The teacher will be walking around the classroom helping and assessing the students throughout the lesson. The class will have a ticket out the door to check for understanding as well. Accommodations a. Group 1 (Low)- Students will be given a board with different answers for doubles up to 6. They will pull different cards and have to know how to write the addition sentence. Once they write the sentence and find the sum they will need to color in the box with the correct sum. b. Group 2(Medium)- Students will be given a board with different answers for doubles up to 10. They will pull different cards and have to know how to write the addition sentence. Once they write the sentence and find the sum they will need to color in the box with the correct sum. c. Group 3 (High)- Students will be given a board with different answers for doubles up to 12. They will pull different cards and have to know how to write the addition sentence. Once they write the sentence and find the sum they will need to color in the box with the correct sum. d. Auditory Learners- Are involved in class discussions and gets to listen to the teachers lecture. e. Visual Learners- Are involved in seeing smart board presentation f. Interpersonal Learners- Are involved in working as a class in class discussion and on their partnerships
