Sydney Shein Dear Class,

In the writing Understanding writing assignments by Dan Mezler, was an extremely valuable read for me. His thoughts were extremely helpful to me because they were from his perspective as a tutor and student. I felt he very much understood the sides of the teacher and student and was therefore able to give useful advice. His section about genre was very relevant to what we are doing in class. He says that by knowing about genre it can help the writer, think about things like purpose, audience, and tone, (142). From writing the genre analysis essay, I very much agree with this statement. Understanding genre helps the writer aim their essay towards the correct people and goal of the essay. Because of this, the quality of an essay is increased. I liked how encouraging Mezler was about talking to your professors. To me, this is a daunting task, but he gave many good points as to why this is a good idea. I also liked how he included examples to back up his points. The example texts from other professors proved a powerful point. The writing by Nathan Timm offered good advice for college students. The entire section about writing with music was very applicable to my life. The statement, fast paced music will help you to type faster and get into a stronger rhythm while you write, (151) is absolutely true for me. I concentrate and write more efficiently with upbeat music.

I enjoyed this piece because of the funny tone in which the author wrote. He definitely succeeded in creating an effective piece for his audience of college students. For me, I dont think the procrastination solution would work for me. I do not work well off of adrenaline and get writing done better when I am not stressed. The part of the writing that talks about writing with others definitely applies to this class. He talks about writing being a social activity and in our class, writing is a very social process.
