Commentary 1.

The lesson in summary is a group activity where the students compare and contrast like objects density by water buoyancy. a. Eighth Grade/ science b. This lesson should be taught because it informs the students of density and its effect on their daily lives. 2. S8CS8. Students will be familiar with the characteristics of scientific knowledge and how it is achieved. Students will apply the following to scientific concepts: Learning Objectives: The students will be able to: 1. Determine if objects are more or less dense compared to other objects with relative sizes 2. Approximate how much density something will have by using their senses. 3. Choose which objects will be denser. 4. Understand the academic vocabulary used in this lesson This lesson makes connections to other disciplines and the outside world a. This lesson connects to the students because the items used in the lab they could find in their house no matter their SES b. This lesson connects to the content i. Density is a science sub-topic ii. This lesson related to the writing discipline because the students had to write in their journal. c. This lesson connects to the world because we discussed the way that a persons weight is different on different planets. The students in this class are ELL students and thy have trouble with English and most of them cannot speak English. I used a translator in my lesson and I used simple English vocabulary on the worksheets. a. The variety of needs are the different language barriers in this class. b. There were 2 students that spoke French in a class full of Spanish speaking students The students couldnt really tell what things were denser than other things. a. The pre-assessment showed the simple terms of English content vocabulary like think instead of hypothesis but the students had no clue about the vocabulary b. My pre-assessment informed me that I had to explain more in detail and have the translator work harder to get the students to understand what I was saying. c. I helped the students learn the vocabulary by having them use the vocabulary in the activity that they did. One example of academic language would be when I showed the class the difference between weight and density with the objects of the lab. a. The key learning task from this portion of the lesson would be the part in the lab when the students had to determine the density of objects compared to the objects that are similar sizes. b. The students practiced this by completing the lab activity.

c. The students understood the syntax of this vocabulary because I used vocabulary in sentences explaining it to them. 7. The students understood the vocabulary and the concepts of density at the end of the lesson a. The post assessment provides direct evidence of learning because the students understood that the vocabulary enough to answer questions about it. b. My post assessment will impact how I teach in the future because I will have more specific instructions in my post assessment and my pre-assessment will be closer to my post assessment
