SUMMARY
The army of killers1 crimes2 of the Austro-Hungarian military
force in Mava, Pocerina (region of western Serbia) and Podrinje (the
Drina river basin) in 1914
The Austro-Hungarian war against Serbia (the Serbian-Austro-Hungarian war) was prepared in detail for more than a decade. The Sarajevo
assassination was welcomed as a casus belli. To attack Serbia, AustroHungary prepared a penal expedition, the aim of which was to destroy
the Serbian people. Upon temporary occupation of the Serbian territory
(Podrinje, Macva, Pocerina) in the summer of 1914, the members of the
Austro-Hungarian military force, committed inconceivable crimes, disrespecting the Hague convention, and this is the subject of this work. Having driven out the enemy from the occupied territories, the Serbian government managed to collect many documents about all these events,
which later had a determining impact on the Russian government in its
decision making about the establishment of volunteer combat units, made
up of members of the Slavic nations, all of them still being Austro-Hungarian subjects. Contrary to the bestial conduct of the members of the
Austro-Hungarian military force, the Serbian army and medical corps
showed due respect of the Hague convention and humane conduct towards the enemy prisoners of war and their wounded.

The medical consequences of the crimes of the Austro-Hungarian

penal expedition are direct and indirect. The direct ones are related to
the medical care given to the survivors, but the indirect ones were significantly more severe. During the second enemy penetration and occupation of almost the third of the kingdom of Serbia at the time, a big mass
of refugees fleed to escape. Catastrophic hygienic conditions caused a
bout of lice at the time and contributed to the occurrence and spread of
an epidemic of spotted typhus and v. febris recurrens.
