2nd Grade Social Studies Communities 3:00 PM Objective: Children will observe pictures Ive taken in different types

of communities within China and compare them to pictures of communities and communities weve seen in the United States. Goal/Rationale: Students will be able to review what they know about urban, suburban and rural communities. The students will review the vocabulary: country; and introduced to the vocabulary: continent. This lesson will also expose them to the Chinese culture as they will see and discuss advertisements, buildings, clothing, food and people. Standards (GLCEs): 2 G2.0.1 Compare the physical and human characteristics of the local community with those of another community Anticipatory Set: 1. Prerequisites/prior knowledge: Students have learned what urban, suburban and rural communities are and compared them to each other. Students have seen China on the classroom globe and have documented the vocabulary country 2. Materials: Power Point slides organized by urban, suburban and rural communities. Slides that include pictures of clothing, buildings, people and advertisements. 3. Expectations Students will be in their seats as the pictures are projected onto our screen in the front of the room Students know that they are expected to remain in their seats with their voices off unless asked to participate and their hands and feet quiet.

If students need assistance or have a question, they know they are expected to use a signal (raise hand, etc.) Procedure: 1. This week weve been talking about urban, suburban, and rural communities. Lets hear some characteristics of an urban community. Im looking for silent hands. Call on 5-6 students, using name sticks. Repeat this process for suburban and rural 2. Today we are going to see some pictures of communities in China. How do you think I have pictures of China? Grab students attention by quickly telling them about travelling to China 3. Begin the slideshow Discuss the first slide that shows a map and Chinas distance from the United States. (My plane ride was 13 hours!) The next slides show photographs of urban communities. Ask students what they see and use name sticks to call on 5-6 students. For each slide discuss what they see and determine as a class what type o community is shown in each picture. The next group of slides are photographs of suburban areas. Ask children what they see, call on 5-6 students using name sticks, and determine what type of community is shown in each picture. The following group of slides are photographs of rural areas in China. Ask children what they see and call on 3 students using name sticks. Discuss what they see. Then, ask children what they do not see compared to the other photographs weve seen. Call on 3 students using name sticks. Determine the type of community shown in the photographs as a whole class.

The last several slides are organized food, clothing, interesting architecture, and advertisements. Discuss each of these slides and what aspects of the Chinese culture they show. Discuss the differences between what they see in the photographs and their own culture here in our community and at home. a. Food: Dumplings, scorpions, rice, b. Architecture: Summer Palace, Great Wall of China c. Clothing: Baby clothes, Chinese theatre costumes, Chinese silk d. Advertisements: Coke, Harry Potter, Kung Fu Panda, Nike Closure: Use name sticks to call on 5 students to share differences between the Chinese culture and our culture.. Use name sticks to call on 5 students to share similarities of the Chinese culture and our culture. Use name sticks to call on students to share what types of communities we saw in the photographs of China. Discuss that there are communities everywhere because there are people with needs. Check for Understanding: Observe and note participation and behavior during the lesson. Assessment: Students will be evaluated on their knowledge of types of communities and their characteristics on their unit test.
