The Global Growth of Tourism

Learning Objectives:
To define what tourism is To explain why tourism has increased throughout the world

What is tourism?
On your own, write down your own definition of tourism (2 mins)
Compare this with your partners definition. Which one is best? Why? What are the differences and/or similarities? Write down a combined definition. (3 mins) Share the definitions with the class. Which one is best? Why? Can they be improved?

Tourism is the biggest industry in the world. Some estimate that one third of the world's population is employed directly or indirectly through tourism. But, what is it?...
Tourism...
... travelling to a place outside your usual environment for business, leisure or other purposes for no longer than one consecutive year. ... activities that require travel from home and staying away from home for at least one night.

... travelling for pleasure to visit places that are different to your usual surroundings.
Have a look at each definition and think of one good statement about it and one thing which could improve the definition.

The Global Growth of Tourism

Tourism throughout the world has grown and grown since the 1950s and is still rising at an extremely quick pace. Tourist numbers each year are now approaching 1 billion (1 000 000 000).

What recent events may have or may affect this in future? - Terrorism? - Economic Recession? - Anything else?
How do you think these events may affect tourist numbers in the world? Will they affect all countries or just some? Why?

Learning Objectives: To give reasons (explain) why tourism is increasing (and why it could decrease) To show differences between describing and explaining

People have more money

There is a larger elderly population

Society is changing. People see a holiday as essential and not a luxury.

Why do you think that tourism has increased so rapidly?

People get more holiday/leisure time

Improvements in infrastructure

The world is shrinking (faster transport)

ICT and communication is becoming more and more advanced

In table groups...
Each of you pick one of the reasons as to why tourism has increased and explain how this has caused an increase. Then explain it to the rest of the group to complete the table. (One or two of you may have to explain 2 reasons!)

Fact
