MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for three days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration, through the membrane, into an area of low concentration, causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, across a selectively permeable membrane. I believe that my hypothesis is correct because vinegar has almost 20% more water than an egg does. After a period of time, the vinegar will dissolve the eggshell, causing the membrane to be vulnerable. So if this statement is true, then the water will flow into the egg, causing it to expand because of it absorbing more water than normal, from a place of high concentration to a place of low concentration. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. CONCLUSION In this lab we were testing the expansion with osmosis. By day 4, the water molecules in the vinegar (high concentration) moved through the selectively permeable membrane, into the egg (low concentration). In period 6, the total expansion was lower than the class average (2.6), at 1.8 cm growth. I hypothesized that if we but the egg in vinegar, then the water would travel into the egg. I hypothesized right. ANALYSIS 1. What caused the eggshell to dissolve? In vinegar, there is 95% water, and 5% acid. The acid in the vinegar dissolved the egg shell, exposing it to the vinegar (water) to pass through the selectively permeable membrane, into the egg.

2. Period 7 Group 3s egg expanded by 4.5 cm after 4 days, compared to Group 7, which expanded 1.1 cm. Compare the results of these two groups. What was the difference in expansion? What was the rate (distance/time) of expansion in 4 days? Explain the discrepancy in data. Why did these groups get different results? The different in the expansion is 3.4 cm different. For group 3, their eggs rate was 1.125, and group 7s egg was 0.275. The discrepancy of the two groups eggs are that they both expanded, but by a different number. They also started from a different circumference length.

3. Why do cells need water? Cells need water because water keeps our body temperature level. It also helps carry out the cells functions. The last big thing that water gets rid of bad chemicals in the cells.
