Lesson Two: Communities

Lesson Objective The students will be able to identify their place in the earth and expand their knowledge on their local community by illustrating their house, street, and state. Assessments Pre-Assessment- Ask students what a community is and what it consists of. During-AssessmentStudents will participate in a brief discussion on the book. Post-AssessmentStudents will construct their own Me on the MAP. This way I will be able to record if the students put the labels in order. Format of Formative Assessments Pre-AssessmentChecklist- Questions concerning their prior knowledge of an actual community and what a community might consist of. During-AssessmentDiscussion of the events occurring throughout the book will be done with the class in order to see if they understand the concept of the book. Accommodations Students will receive assistance if they have trouble spelling the labels (house, street, and town) and will also be assisted if they fail to understand what each concept means.

Post-AssessmentBook constructionUsed to make record of which students caught on to the concept taught and which did not. The labels had to be placed in sequencing order. The assessments for this lesson will allow me to see where each student stands with prior knowledge and where they are once the lesson is completed. Before teaching the lesson, I will pre assess the students using a checklist to check off students who have adequate knowledge of the topic. The post-assessment will be in the form of a book construction. The pre assessment for this lesson involves the students answering questions about what an actual community is and what it might consist of. This allows me to see what their prior knowledge on the topic is. The during assessment is a brief discussion of the events that occurred throughout the book. The assessment will allow me to see if students understand what is being read. The post assessment involves the children constructing their own book about their

community. Reading through their books enabled me to see if each student grasped the concept that was taught in this lesson. With the completion of this lesson, the students will now be familiarized with their understanding about their place in the earth. The understanding of this concept is valuable and will be beneficial in the later grades when they study maps.
