Teacher Work Sample: 9. Learning Environment A.

Classroom Management In my classroom I think it would be important to make that all students feel welcomed. This means that I, as a teacher, would have to ensure that I keep a positive attitude and that other students treat others with respect. Ensuring that students are respectful will reduce negative behaviors that may be directed at other students. This can be done by making sure that everyone in the class, including myself, is attentive and listening to what others have to say. Also, acknowledging and congratulating positive behaviors will show students that appropriate behaviors are welcomed in the classroom. This means that students will not feel as though they have to act out to get attention. 1. Students should be respectful to others by waiting for the speaker to finish talking before he/she begins to speak. 2. If a student knows the answer to a question, has a question, or has another need he/she should raise their hand and wait to be called upon. 3. Students should show willingness to follow all school rules to ensure a safe learning environment for all students 4. Students should respect the opinions of others and the thoughts they may have. Consequences o o o Verbal Warning One-on-One meeting with student Meeting with student and Parent. If parent is unable to meet at school, then a phone conference will be use in its place. o o Lunch/After school detention Referral to Administration

For students who are not following the classroom/school rules, a verbal acknowledgement of such rule breaking would suffice in most cases. In most cases, escalating an issue beyond a verbal reprimand is unnecessary. This shows students that their actions are disappointing and, assuming I show them the respect they want and deserve that should be more than enough to quell any negative problems. Positive reinforcements will vary. Positive actions should be rewarded with at a higher rate and at a much greater level to prove, without any doubt, that those are desirable actions. These may include a verbal acknowledgement, a prize of some sort

(extra credit or candy), or free time. Students are much more willing to respond to positive reinforcement if the reinforcement is something they want and, therefore, will be more willing to repeat said actions without being asked to do so. Non-Instructional Routines and Procedures At the beginning of most, if not all, lessons, there will be a bellringer activity or a similar activity that the students must complete in order to turn in or discuss. This will make sure students always know what is required of them when they come to class and will help in making sure students are not overly talkative at the beginning of each class. As a way to end class, there will be, if possible, a wrap up of what the class went over in class that day. This will allow students to put things away, something they do early anyways, and as a way to reinforce the material. Materials will be handed out to the front of each row so that students may hand copies to the student behind them. If I am not doing this, then a student will be asked, or one may volunteer, to hand the materials out for me. Materials will be collected in a similar manner. Assignments will be passed to the front of each row, or turned in prior to the start of class, and then placed into a pre-designated basket. To make sure students are not playing around and paying attention, I will walk around the classroom, based on the space available. If students need to get up and use the bathroom, sharpen a pencil, or something of this nature, then they will be asked to do so either prior to the start of the lesson or when there is not a lecture taking place. Students will be asked to come to my class and leave my class in an orderly fashion, to help with this, students will come to class and complete a bellringer or line up at the door to leave. Students will be told to follow me at all times during any sort of drill that may take place. This is important for their safety. Students will also be in an orderly line and follow me to the spot designated to our class in the case of a emergency.
