The Butterfly Life Cycle Time Allotted: 45 Minutes Grade Level: First Grade Subject: Science Materials Required:

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle Scissors Tape Dry Erase Marker Pictures of each stage of a butterflys life cycle, labels, and arrows (enough for each pair of students and a set for the teacher) Butterfly Worksheet Chart for K-W-L

Michigan Content Expectations L.OL.01.21: Describe the life cycle of animals including the following stages: egg, young, adult; egg, larva, pupa, adult.

Objective: Teacher Friendly Objective: The student will identify the life cycle of a butterfly including the flowing stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Proficiency will be demonstrated by receiving 3 out of 3 on the Butterfly Lifecycle Worksheet Rubric. {Knowledge} Student Friendly Objective: The student will identify the four stages of a butterflys life cycle. {Knowledge}

Assessment: Formal Formative: This will be observed through the K column of the K-W-L chart during the anticipatory set. I will be able to assess my students to see what they know about butterflies in general and I will be able to see if they know anything about the butterfly life cycle. At the end of the lesson I will also be able to assess what the students have learned by the information they want to add to the L column on the chart. Based off of the information gathered from the W column I will be able to create future lessons to answer their questions along with teaching the students other objectives. Informal Interim: During guided practice I will have students work in partners to put the butterfly life cycle in the correct order using the pictures and arrows that I provided them. As the students are working I will make sure to walk around and see how each pair is doing. If I happen to see a pair that has the incorrect order I will help the students to figure out the correct order of

the cycle without giving them the answer. This will help me to determine if my students will be prepared to move on to independent practice or if I need to spend more time on the order of the life cycle. Formal Summative: During independent practices I will be giving students a worksheet called a Snapshot of Thinking. On this worksheet the students will have to identify the correct order of the four stages of the butterflys life cycle by correctly writing the name of each stage on the line provided. The pictures on the worksheet will be the same pictures that we used during modeling and guiding practice.

Instructional Procedure: 1. Anticipatory Set: a. Tell the students that during this lesson they are to be sitting crisscross applesauce on the floor unless told otherwise. Make sure to remind them to raise their hand if they want to say something unless I say they can speak out loud. Remind them that I want everyone to have a chance to share with the class and if everyone is speaking at once this is not possible. b. Tell the students that they are going to be completing a K-W-L chart as a class about butterflies. c. Remind the children about what the K-W-L chart is. O is for observations, W is for what they are wondering, and L is for what they learned. d. Start to fill out the K and W columns of the chart as a class. Try to prompt each student to share information. If no student talks about the change that a butterfly goes through. Ask the students if they knew that a butterfly was once a caterpillar. Then ask the students if anyone has ever heard of a big word called metamorphosis. Say that the caterpillar goes through a change which is called metamorphosis. e. Next tell the students that they are going to be learning about what metamorphosis is. Help the students to come up with questions like what happens during metamorphosis, how does the caterpillar change, etc. Write these questions under the W part of the chart. f. Now read the book called The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Before reading the book aloud make sure to tell the students to be listening for the different stages that the butterfly goes through. I will make sure to point out each stage of the life cycle as I come across them in the book. Tell the students that larva is another name for caterpillar, pupa is another name for chrysalis, and adult is another name for butterfly. Stress this to the students and have them say larva, pupa, and adult out loud to help with comprehension. Add anything need to the W or L section. Tell the students in the next lesson that they will be able to add more to the L section. 2. State Purpose and Objective of Lesson: a. Tell the students that they are going to start learning about the four stages of a butterflys life cycle and by the end of todays lesson they will be able to identify all four stages of the life cycle. . b. Tell them that it is important for them to learn about the life cycle of a butterfly because it will help them to better understand the life cycle that each of us will go through during our own lives.

3. Instructional Input/Direct Instruction: a. The teacher will read the very hungry caterpillar, write on the K-W-L chart, model how to do the activity, and the teacher will walk around the room during guided practice to help the student if needed. b. The students observer the teacher modeling the guided practice activity, work in pairs to do the guided practice, and complete the assessment worksheet. 4. Modeling: a. Have the students sit with each other in pairs and give each of them a set of pictures. Tell the students that there are four pictures and each picture represents a different stage in a butterflys life cycle. Let the students look at the pictures and guess to see if they can tell which picture represents which stage of the butterflys life cycle. b. Then once I go over the pictures with the students I will tell them that they will be working with their partners to put the correct name of each stage under the picture that represents that stage, but first I am going to show them how to do this. c. Place all of the pictures of the butterfly life cycle on the board in the correct order. Hold up the pieces of paper that says egg, larva, pupa, and adult on them. Tell the students that I want them to say the name that is on the piece of paper aloud and then place it under the picture that it goes with. Show the students this by saying egg and then placing the piece of paper that says egg on the picture with the egg on it. Do this for the remaining three stages. 5. Guided Practice: a. I will tell the students to work with their partners and do exactly what I did. Remind them to say the name of each stage before placing the piece of paper that has the name below the correct picture on their desk. Remember to let them know that I will be walking around to assist them as needed. 6. Independent Practice: a. For independent practice I will give my students a worksheet that has the same exact pictures that I used during modeling and they used during guided practice. For this worksheet I will expect the students to identify which picture represents which stage of a butterflys lifecycle by writing the correct name of each stage on the line below. I will have the names of each stage written on the board in a random order. This way students will be able to see the correct spelling of each stage since they will not be assessed on this. I will also show the students the rubric that I will be using to assess them with. 7. Closure: a. Take a few minutes and have the students talk about any new information that they have gained and add it to the K-W-L chart under the L column. b. Have the students reread the objective and see if they have meant it. c. Ask if anyone can name the first stage of a butterflys life cycle, second, etc. Then ask if there is a student who can name all four in the correct order. d. Tell the students that they will be adding more to their K-W-L charts in the next lesson. Let the students know that they will also be working in groups to act out the four stages of a butterflys life cycle in another lesson.

I will have enough copies of these pictures precut out for each pair of students to use during guided practice. The pictures given to the students will also be printed bigger but for the purpose of typing on the same page I made the image smaller. I will also have a bigger version of these pictures for myself to use on the board during modeling and again if need be throughout the lesson.
