11 December 2013 Dr.

Leslie Bruce Department of English, Comparative Literature, and Linguistics California State University, Fullerton P.O. Box 34080 Fullerton, CA 92834-9480 Dear Dr. Bruce, The purpose of the letter is to present documents contained in the portfolio to exemplify my ability to fulfill the student learning outcomes (SLOs 1-6), which are listed in the course syllabus. The included texts are: Cover letter, Original Blog With Your Comments, Peer Review, Revised Blog, Portfolio Cover Letter Peer Review, and the Tracking the Imperiled Bluefin From Ocean to Sushi Platter entre. These documents should show my mastery of meeting the SLOs but also provide evidence of my improvements of my writing abilities throughout the semester. My cover letter is arranged by detailing each document in chronological order. Some SLOs will overlap due to them being found in multiple documents. The first document I have presented is my Cover Letter. My cover letter covers numerous SLOs. It meets SLO 1 by it being a formal document. Also it covers SLO 1 by showing work that I have worked on out of class as well as in the classroom. By stating my purpose of the cover letter The purpose of the letter is to present documents contained in the portfolio to exemplify my ability to satisfy the student learning outcomes (SLOs 1-6), which are listed in the course syllabus I am completing the purpose portion of SLO 1. By arranging my cover letter in order of documents its shows the ability of organization, which is an aspect mentioned in SLO 4. It also covers the audience portion of SLO 4 by focusing on you Dr. Bruce. The language of my Cover Letter covers SLO 5 by being formal and consistent. Although I am trying to prove that I have met each SLO by providing proof to my claim I am avoiding any type of bias, which also meets another portion of SLO 5. Next, I have presented is my original blog post along with your comments. My original post was written to appeal to my fellow classmates, so I wrote it in a simple and informal tone. Being an informal document it covers SLO 1. A majority of my blog was done outside of the classroom so it also covers that portion in SLO 1 such as revision from my original blog to the new blog presented in my portfolio. The peer review document covers the revision section of SLO 6. Chris McLaren reviewed my paper and informed my that I needed to add a source to my Blog for it to cover SLO 2. Chris also mentioned that I needed to analyze my quotations thoroughly as well as being limiting the lengths of the quote I use, which is also what you suggested I do in the feedback you left me. I was able to shorten some quotations and add a thesis. My next document is my Revised Blog post. My original blog did not contain proper scholar citation, so by me adding a source to my revised blog I was able to cover SLO 2 understanding the importance of ethical citation. This document also meets the revision portion of SLO 6 by showing improvements in my writing by the changes I made from the original post. In the comments you left me for my original blog post you mentioned I needed to rhetorically focused thesis sentence saying exactly what I think the

water imagery is communicating. I was able to revise my thesis making it clear what the image is trying to say. Also I was able to elaborate on analyzing the quotations I used as well as stating what the messages I thought the image was sending to its audience. For SLO 6 I presented the cover letter review sheet I completed for Chris McLaren showing my work of improving another peers writing. As you can see I filled out what he did right and wrong. Also I mentioned that he should to be direct when it comes to stating how he met each detail of the SLO. Originally he wasnt specific on how he met the SLOs so I told him to be clear and concise of how he met the SLO so there is no confusion with not meeting all of the criteria. Since I chose to use my blog document it did not cover SLO 3, which involved compare and contrasting alternative arguments and claims. My final document is the analysis of Tracking the Bluefin From Ocean to Sushi Platter that we did in class. This assignment presented arguments the author made to oblige seasonal bans and restrictions of fishing for Bluefin. The counter arguments made by the boat owners saying that the current restrictions on long-line fishing in the Gulf are already sufficient. Also with addition that spawning zones shift yearly. Sincerely, Ian Morano
