Minilesson Format for Phonemic Awareness Name: Hannah Illges Date: December 6th, 2013 Objective or Focus: 3rd

Grade Language Arts standard (20) Know and apply gradelevel phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. [RF.3.3] Materials List: Tsihrts markers, white board/ markers popsicle sticks game worksheets Invitation or Introduction: The teacher will begin by explaining to the class what they will be learning today. She will start by diving the class into three groups. Each group will get a different color t-shirt. One group will have prefixes listed on their shirt, one group will have suffixes and the last group will have root words. As a way to engage students they will play elbow tag but they will have to make words so the root words will stand still while the prefixes and suffixes run around and try to find a match that makes a word. This will be a fun way to get their minds working as well as getting them to realize that prefixes and suffixes are two different things. Some of the words will include anti bodies, midterm, and movement, smartest, nonactive and so on. Now that the teacher has shown the class what prefixes and suffixes are she will begin to focus on 10 pre-chosen ones to learn about and pair with words. There will be 5 suffixes and 5 prefixes. Anti Able De Ed Dis Est Mid Ful Non Ment

From this list she will write the prefixes first on the board and define them in a few words then write a word commonly seen that uses the specific prefix she is focused on. After she teaches the prefixes she will then move to the suffixes. Once she reviews each of those she will have the students come up and using their shirts, form the words that were discussed in the lesson. This will allow students to see and hopefully understand better which words make good pairs and understand the meaning.

Teacher Modeling: Now that the students understand the prefixes we are working with, they will divided into table groups and given popsicle sticks. The popsicle sticks have root words and then some of them have prefixes and suffixes on them as well. This will be a fun game where they have to work together and match the words. The teacher will walk about and listen out for communication by the group. The small group (most will contain three people) will have worksheets where they have to write down the word the put together and what they think it means. Each group will turn in a worksheet to show what they did.

Independent Practice: When students complete the group game activity they will all be asked to go back to the table and wait for the entire class to complete the activity. Upon completing the activity, the teacher will present the students with a worksheet that is matching the prefix and the root word together when given a definition. This worksheet will be turned in to the teacher when they are done. Assessment and Reflection: The students will turn in their worksheet above and that will be their assessment. It will demonstrate vocabulary understanding as well as grasping the prefix/suffix. The grading will be done with ninety percent accuracy being the passing score. From here the teacher can see how well the students were able to recall the information. Here is an example of what the worksheet would look like.
