Synopsis of supreme court cases MIC DOES NOT WORK 1.

Brown vs board of education- This case is a consolidation of several different cases from Kansas, South Carolina, Virginia, and Delaware. Several African American wanted to attend to public schools that required or permitted segregation based on race. The plaintiffs alleged that segregation was unconstitutional under the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. It is my number one because it signified a change in pace in terms of civil rights. 2. roe vs wade- Roe (P), a pregnant single woman, brought a class action suit challenging the constitutionality of the Texas abortion laws. These laws made it a crime to obtain or attempt an abortion except on medical advice to save the life of the mother. The court ruled however that injunctive relief was not warranted and that the Does complaint was not justiciable. Roe and Hallford won their lawsuits at trial. The district court held that the Texas abortion statutes were void as vague and for overbroadly infringing the Ninth and Fourteenth Amendment rights of the plaintiffs. This case signified individual rights as well as pro life vs pro choice. 3. Miranda vs. Arizona- Miranda v. Arizona, was a landmark decision of the United States Supreme Court which passed 54. The Court said that statements made in response to interrogation by a defendant in police custody will be admissible at trial only if the prosecution can show that the defendant was informed of the right to consult with an attorney before and during questioning and of the right against self-incrimination prior to questioning by police, and that the defendant not only understood these rights, but voluntarily waived them. Miranda rights formed from this. 4. Marbury v. Madison was a landmark United States Supreme Court case in which the Court formed the basis for the exercise of judicial review in the United States under Article III of the Constitution. This defined judicial review. 5. District of Columbia vs heller-t he Second Amendment to the United States Constitution protects an individual's right to possess a firearm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home and within federal boundaries. The Supreme Court struck down the Firearms Control Regulations Act of 1975 as unconstitutional, determined that handguns are "arms" for the purposes of the Second Amendment, found that the District of Columbia's regulations act was an unconstitutional banning. 6. Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission- the United States Supreme Court held that the First Amendment prohibits the government from restricting political independent expenditures by corporations, associations, or labor unions. 7. plessy vs Ferguson- is a decision in which that upholding the constitutionality of state laws requires racial segregation in public facilities under the doctrine of "separate but equal". 8. bush vs gore- agreed that there was an Equal Protection Clause violation in using different standards of counting in different counties.[3]

Five justices agreed that December was the deadline Florida had established for recounts. Justices Breyer and Souter wanted to remand the case to the Florida Supreme Court to permit that court to establish uniform standards of what constituted a legal vote and then manually recount all ballots using those standards. 9-lawrence vs texas- the Court struck down the sodomy law in Texas and invalidated sodomy laws in thirteen other states, making same-sex sexual activity legal in every U.S. state and territory. 10-Dred scott vs Sanford- decided that slaves have no rights. They could not be American citizens and therefore had no standing to sue in federal court and that the federal government had no power to regulate slavery in the federal territories
