Lambert, Madeline English 1311 Discourse Communities In order to define who I am as an individual would mean to break down each

of my discourse communities My discourse communities consist of social, !rofessional, and !ersonal Each of these communities has in some way sha!ed the !erson I am today, and will continue to sha!e the !erson I will become in my future "he most im!ortant communities that I belong to are my family, my friends, and academics "he most vital !iece of my discourse communities is my family# they sha!e the !erson I am becoming every single day I was born into a generous, su!!ortive, loving and multicultural family "hey have taught me the im!ortance of being strong and inde!endent "hey have also raised me to a!!reciate my education and value every single day of my life "he communication I use with my family is a mi$ of English, %!anish, and %!anglish &ur conversations are normally informal and !layful If I were conversing with a !rofessor or work colleague my tone would be formal, for e$am!le '(ello, how are you)' (owever with my family our conversations can be described as silly and informal *or e$am!le I would greet my relatives, '(ola+ ,hat have you been u! to)' "he conversations I have with my family normally revolve around gossi!, work, school, and our goals for the future &ur conversations carry affection, love and res!ect I rely on my discourse community of family to be there for me through thick and thin, and to be my soft !lace to land when things get rough -nother essential discourse community in my life are my friends "hese relationshi!s are im!ortant in my everyday life because they are my confidants I became a !art of this discourse community over time I built these relationshi!s with trust,

loyalty, and a good sense of humor My conversations with my friends are informal, but are even less informal than the conversations I have with my family *or e$am!le, when running into a friend I would say, ',hat.s u! doll, how.s it goin)' I build my friendshi!s from sharing a similar sense of humor and sarcastic !ersonalities "his community is essential to who I am because my friends have a direct line to my funny bone, and are the kind of good natured !eo!le I can count on ,hether it be an ear to listen, a hel!ing hand, or /ust a silly conversation my friends hel! me to become a better !erson I invest my time very wisely in my academics which is one of my most im!ortant discourse communities "his community consists of my !eers, and !rofessors ,hen s!eaking with the !eo!le involved in this community our conversations are very formal I believe it is im!ortant to !ro/ect a good image when in my academic environment *or e$am!le, when conversing with my !rofessors and !eers I would say, '0ood morning, how are you)' My diction and tone of these conversations would be verbose and animated "his community is im!ortant to me because I believe education is an im!ortant !art in molding the minds of the youth ,e never really sto! learning, and we learn new things everyday "hrough these discourse communities, I have develo!ed and become the young woman I am today Each community has also taught me to value my education, to establish my !riorities, and balance my time and relationshi!s My discourse communities are essential to every as!ect of my life
