Chelsy DeLaney IA: Practicum II Reflection Statements

1. Topic/Standard/Goal/Program Outcome: Support all learning based on knowledge of subject matter. What I did: In Advanced Reading & Language Arts, I completed an assessment on poetry, I feel that this shows a clear understanding of what poetry is and many of the different types; this assignment gave a definition of the different types along with an example. I have uploaded the link to this assignment below. (lp4poetryassignment) What I learned: I learned that it is very important to learn, know, and understand the subject matter to the best of our abilities. The students will depend on us to know the information. I also learned that it is okay and best to ask for assistance and help if you need it. The most important thing is to get a good understanding in order to learn. How I will use what I have learned or how I used what I learned: I know that I will use all of the information and skills on a daily basis as an EA. As I volunteer with students, I use this all of the time, I teach them ways to learn their material, ways to study, and I try and find a fun way to learn or remember their studies.

2. Topic/Standard/Goal/Program Outcome: Identify developmentally appropriate child/adolescent physical, social/emotional, intellectual, and language characteristics and their developmental and environmental impact on learning. What I did: For my Special Education, Educating a Child course, I had the opportunity to observe in a CDC classroom and through this observation and time spent learning about how this classroom functions, what these particular students desire, need, and what tools and such work best for giving them the best education possible. I have uploaded the link to this assignment below. (special_educationobservation1) What I learned: I learned that there are many things that go into making a successful classroom, that it is more than just a good teacher. It involves knowing your students inside and out and to your best ability, having the right tools, and materials available to help each student learn in their own individual way. How I will use what I have learned or how I used what I learned: I feel that I will use this information daily while working with students, as an EA you typically work with a selection of students and each one of the student will most likely be different from the other in terms of learning, so learning how to work with different students and learning what different tools, materials, and other things are available to students is very important and knowledge I will use daily. 3. Topic/Standard/Goal/Program Outcome: Adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs of all learners. What I did: During my practicum I was working with an 8th grade girl in her business class, and many times they would come into the classroom and the teacher would have 3 or 4 questions on the board written all into one paragraph. For this student that was too much information in one sentence although it was a paragraph. So with this I would regularly go into this classroom before class started and see if this was on the board, if it was I would write down the questions and type them into 3-4 separate questions with lines below for her to answer them. This helped her a lot, she was doing everything the other students were it just broke it down and made is visually appealing to her. I have also adapted and made behavior charts for students through my classes in the IA program. I believe strongly in these charts I feel that students when they have to see a negative behavior written down or mark it themselves it changes how they behave because they can see it and realize it as it is happening. For this I have attached a link to my behavior chart from class Special Education, Educating a Child course. This was a chart for working with students with Challenging behaviors. (working_with_challenging_behaviors_pat-1) What I learned: I learned about the different things that can be modified and adapted for students with different learning needs. How I will use what I have learned or how I used what I learned: I know that an EA I will create and modify assignments and tasks for students, and it is something that I was able to do a few times through my Practicum. I will use this

information, skill by learning what works best for my student, communicating with case managers and teachers to create something that give the student the best chance at completing the assignment to the best of their abilitiy. 4. Topic/Standard/Goal/Program Outcome: Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, media and technology to foster the development of critical thinking and problem solving. What I did: For Practicum II I created this e-portfolio to showcase all of my achievements and skills in one easily assessable place. I feel this is by far my best use of technology and would love to incorporate this into my students work at some point. Through this program I have also used WikiSpace and Voki to create technology based assignments. What I learned: Through this program I have used technology such as wikispace, voki, and weebly to create. I was new to all of these resources prior to the Instructional Assistant program. I plan to continue to use them, especially weebly to keep updating this portfolio. How I will use what I have learned or how I used what I learned: My goal is to continue to expand on these levels of thinking skills and the different pieces of technology that can go along with developing them. (Weebly Portfolio for example) 5. Topic/Standard/Goal/Program Outcome: Use proactive classroom management techniques to promote a positive class climate, intrinsic motivation, and optimal learning. What I did: I created a resource guide to promote and encourage positive behaviors in the classroom and at school in general. What I learned: I learned different strategies to use when working with children and their behaviors. How I will use what I have learned or how I used what I learned: As a current lunch supervision EA I use these skills daily, I encourage the students to promote and display positive behaviors using many of these techniques. Attached is a link to my positive behaviors resource guide. (positive_lp5assessment) 6. Topic/Standard/Goal/Program Outcome: Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication in working collaboratively within the school setting and interactions with students and families. What I did: While working in my Practicum Site I created a Welcome Letter to send home with parents, talking a bit about myself and what I would be doing in their childs classroom. This included my contact information to open up the lines of communication between the students families and myself. This is shown at the top of work samples in my eportfolio) What I learned: This meets this program outcome of written and verbal communication and being able to work collaboratively with the school and with the families. My contact information is included for the families to contact me personally with any questions. How I will use what I have learned or how I used what I learned: My continued goals are to continue to have a good communication with the school as well as the families of the students to be able to have a collaborative working relationship. 7. Topic/Standard/Goal/Program Outcome: Assist in planning and implementing instructional strategies that reflect the learning cycle. What I did: In my Techniques for math course I had to create a Math Madness Assessment, in this assignment I had to create six math centers that pertain to all different aspects of math. What I learned: I learned how to help with the planning and implementing of different instructional strategies to help with all learning styles as well as different levels of learning. How I will use what I have learned or how I used what I learned: I now have a better understanding of the planning part of lesson plans and will be able to better assist the teachers that I work with in the future. File attached is a PowerPoint presentation. (presentation3) 8. Topic/Standard/Goal/Program Outcome: Utilize informal assessment strategies to collect data for the support of student learning.

What I did: In my Techniques for Reading Course, I completed a Student Center Reading Project. For this project I was worked with a child to assess her fluency, reading rate and word identification. I used informal assessments to support her in her reading skills. What I learned: I learned many things about informal assessment and how to apply them to teaching. How I will use what I have learned or how I used what I learned: I know that reading is a skill many students need extra support with and I feel that this course and this assessment give me some very valuable knowledge in ways in which I can help with student reading, skills to use, tools to use, to help encourage and support better reading. File attached is a PowerPoint presentation. (Abuela.pptx) 9. Topic/Standard/Goal/Program Outcome: Incorporate the reflective process to promote student learning and professional growth. What I did: I completed my own self-evaluation as well as my cooperating teachers evaluation, and my Instructional Assistant Program Instructors evaluation. These attachments can be found under the evaluations tab in my e-portfolio.) What I learned: I learned how to objectively reflect on the things that I had done over the semester and determine if I had met the goals or did I need to continue working towards them. I gave me the insight to see where I need to grow as well as my strengths. How I will use what I have learned or how I used what I learned: These are going to help me in the future because I will be well aware of my strengths and weaknesses. 10. Topic/Standard/Goal/Program Outcome: Assume professional responsibility for ethical, moral, and legal policies and procedures. What I did: In my Teamwork in the School Setting course, we had an assignment based on how we would react and address certain common situations and occur in schools. What I learned: For this I learned about ways to react, address, and work through common difficult situations. I enjoyed this assignment because it gave me a chance to really look into how I interact and address issues at school. How I will use what I have learned or how I used what I learned: This knowledge will serve me well in my position as an Educational Assistant in public education. These are all things I will need to know to do the job well. File attached is (lp7assessment) 11. Topic/Standard/Goal/Program Outcome: Provide for health and safety needs of students. What I did: For my curriculum-planning course I created a Thematic Handout on Fire Safety. What I learned: I learned about KWL charts, and how to present information in a way that is appropriate and specific to a specific age group but still very effective. How I will use what I have learned or how I used what I learned: That we need to promote health and safety to children at a young age and teach them appropriate ways to react to safety situations. File attached is a PowerPoint presentation about fire safety. (revisedthematichandout)
