John Proctors role The Crucible was written by Arthur Miller and is about the problems experienced throughout the Salem Witch Trials. The people of Salem began the witch trials when witchcraft was discovered in the colony. People who were convicted had to go through tests in which they would die either way. People would be convicted and they were completely innocent. Others would be accused by other people that wanted a loose end tied up. John Proctor was caught in a love triangle that involved accusations of witchcraft. John Proctor was able to relate to many people in the play. Proctor was a strong, sensible, and easy going farmer (Act 1.authors notes). Proctor would handle problems with ease most of the time but made mistakes every now and then. A problem he couldnt handle was Abigail. John Proctor was also a sinner that had committed adultery with Abigail (Act 1. Line 423). His lust had gotten the better of him and he committed the crime. There was no way for him to get out of the problem. John Proctors problem was trying to keep people from finding out that he was having an affair with Abigail. Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before Ill ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, Abby. (Act 1. Line

Delgado 1 450). He is scared that Abigail will let the secret out and put his name in jeopardy. He wants her to forget that it ever happened completely. Abigail were stabbed tonight; a needle were found stuck into her body. And she charges me? Aye. (Act 2, line 858). Abby wants Elizabeth out of the way so that she can have John all to herself. She saw the opportunity and took advantage of it. John later convicted and he is set to hang. John Proctor is given the opportunity to be set free but the confession will be told to the village. Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life!(Act 4. Line 725). John is a good person to the village and he doesnt want the people to think of him badly. If h is name goes out he will be miserable for the rest of his life. I can. And theres your first marvel. That I can. (Act 4. Line 779.) John would rather die than soil his name. By doing this he dies with his dignity and is happy. The people wont think of John Proctor of what he really was. John tried to control Abigail but she got him exposed and he was sentenced to death but if he confessed to the accusation his name would be soiled so he didnt confess and died. Abigail loved John but he was already married to Elizabeth, so since there was problems with witchcraft going on she accused Elizabeth of Witchcraft. John didnt want the village to know his crime and in the end he died so that his name wouldnt be soiled
