Michigan Content Expectations: K-G5.0.1 Describe ways people use the environment to meet human needs and wants (e.g., food, shelter, clothing). Objective: The student will be able to identify and describe human needs and wants and will be able to score 80% on a picture assessment to demonstrate proficiency. (Knowledge) Assessment: Formative: Completion of the following activities will physically demonstrate student learning, and they will score a 1 or 2 on the rubric or they will stay in at recess to complete their work: Word Wall Vocabulary Companion Want and Needs Sort Want and Need Booklet Summative: Students will score 80% on a picture assessment.

Instructional Procedure: 1. Anticipatory Set: (Allotted Time: 20 minutes) a. Read the book Needs and Wants by Gillio M. Olson. b. Discuss the book through these discussion questions: i. Ask students: What needs do people have? 1. Make a t-chart of the students needs ii. Ask students: What do people want? 1. Fill in the other half of the t-chart with their wants. iii. Ask students: How do people get what they want or need? 1. Ask students why people need to have jobs. 2. Discuss the idea that people work to earn money to buy things for their families that they need. 2. State Purpose and Objective of Lesson: (2 minutes) a. Chorally read the objective and tell students what they will be doing over the course of the lesson. b. Tell them why its important to them to learn about their needs and wants. c. Set behavior expectations: i. SOT stay on task ii. 6 inch voices during projects iii. Practice Finding Nemo attention getter. 3. Instruction: (During every section of the instruction, the teacher will set a timer to keep students on task and the lesson propagating. During work times, the teacher will play soft background music to help with behavior management.) a. Direct Interactive Instruction (10 minutes) i. Word Wall (Teacher: add these two words). 1. Needs: something people much have to live 2. Wants: something people would like to have. ii. Word Wall Vocabulary Companion (Students will complete this visual-spatial vocabulary work)

b. Modeling: (10 minutes) i. Model how to do the picture sort. (Then proceed to complete the picture sort.) ii. Model how to create the needs and wants book. (Then proceed to create the picture book) c. Guided Practice: (13 minutes) i. Students will collaborate with shoulder buddy to sort and glue the needs and wants activity sheet. ii. The teacher will walk around the class with a tally sheet checking off that both students are contributing to the activity.

d. Independent Practice: (20 minutes) i. Students will write, color, and compile needs and wants booklet.

Differentiated Consideration a. If students do not finish their work, they will have to stay in during recess. b. Students may need help copying down the vocabulary definition for Needs and Wants, the teacher will help and should remind them to ask classmates for help.

5. Closure: (Allotted Time: 5 minutes) a. Chorally reread objective and discuss how it was accomplished. b. Distribute and complete the picture matching assessment.
