2 ,000 s!"are miles o# land that e$tends into Ari%ona, Ne& 'e$ico, and (tah) It is the lar*est reservation in the (nited States &ith a pop"lation o# more than 300,000 enrolled members) Appro$imatel+ hal# o# the pop"lation lives on the reservation &hile the other hal# p"rs"es an ed"cation or emplo+ment o## the reservation) The Navajo Nation practices sel#,determination b+ providin* p"blic sa#et+ to its on,reservation members) Accordin* to the Navajo Nation -ivision o# ."blic Sa#et+, there are onl+ 3/0 commissioned o##icers patrollin* 2 ,000 s!"are miles and servicin* more than 100,000 people) 1o&ever, there is a more recent 2o##icer,#orce2 n"mber o# onl+ 230 o##icers, ma4in* the ratio 0)3 o##icers per 1,000 people compared to the national avera*e o# 3 o##icers per 1,000) Accordin* to the Navajo Nation -ivision o# ."blic Sa#et+, o##icers respond to over 256,000 calls #or the Navajo p"blic) The main t+pes o# calls the+ respond to incl"de7 domestic violence, se$"al ab"se, dr"* and alcohol ab"se, and *an* activities) The hi*hest rates o# crime committed &ere violence and se$ crimes) 8rom a police report, a violent crime occ"rs once ever+ 10 ho"rs &hile there are / rapes per &ee4 on the reservation) There are onl+ seven police departments on the Navajo Nation located in the hi*her pop"lated to&ns s"ch as T"ba 9it+, Ari%ona, and Shiproc4, Ne& 'e$ico) :et&een these seven districts are man+ r"ral comm"nities &here crime can easil+ be committed and "nreported) The shorta*e o# o##icers deepl+ e##ects those comm"nities) J"risdiction policies also have an e##ect on certain areas o# the Navajo Nation) 8or e$ample, Navajo comm"nities j"st a #e& miles so"th o# the ;all"p, Ne& 'e$ico, cit+ limits have to a&ait a response #rom the police department o#
