Target audience: 1st Survey Analysis

After carrying out my survey the results of the first question showed that the most preferred genres are Horror and Thriller. The audience have chosen genres that can easily be combined into hybrid genre type films, as the two most selected genres are horror and thriller I will combine these two genres into a hybrid as they both have elements of each one in them. Taking these results into account I will focus mainly on making a thriller, with elements of horror. I will do this to appeal to the majority of my target audience. To achieve success in this I will analyse well known horror-thrillers to gain inspiration to create the start of my film. However a selected amount of the audience have chosen romance and adventure to make sure my film is viewable to a wider range of audience I will use a small amount of aspects of these selected genres to make the film enjoyable for a wider population.

From looking at the information from the second question I have analysed that 72% of the subjects that have taken the survey want prefer the main character to be male. To make sure the film is a success to the audience we will have an antagonist male character staring in our own film. The main audience of this film will be males who want to be able to relate to the antagonist character. Although over 20% of the public that took the survey wanted the staring character to be female we will be using a female princess so if something happened to the female it would make that selected amount of the audience sympathise for that character this will add a certain sense of emotion to our film.

The third question for my survey asks about the crimes the audience find most distressing, from the statisitics I have analasied, I can see that the audience I aim aiming at find kidnap murder and grevious body harm the three most troubbling crimes. Kidnap is chosen at the highest troubbled crime at 70% whereas murder and grevious body harm is 65%

to make sure my film is produced to a high standard and aimed towards the correct target market I am going to include these three crimes in my thriller/horror hybrid production. However when publishing the survey there were mutipul choice options what makes the statistics of the graph look un correct, the people that had taken the questionaire had chosen multiple options not just one although this is the case I have noticed that the public do not find car theft, burglary or drug dealing distressing and only 10% showed that the had found fraud distressing to themselves.

The statistics from the fourth question on the survey shows that the population belive that a young girl would look more vunrable dresed In minimal clothing, 40% have also said that a young girl looks more vulnerable with good looks and half said a shy personality makes her look vulnerable. This reverts back to Mulveys theory how a female character is submissive and weak. In my media production I will use certain aspects to make the girl in my film to make her look vunrable when the camera is shown on her. I thought the location was very key to how vunrable the girl will look towards the audience and how little people there will be around in the background of the production. Due to the statistics of the survey results show that a dark un populated alley way will make the girl look more alone and isolated, this could make her more vunrable as there is no sign of protection around her and the audience will be on edge because of the lack of no background civilisation.

The results from question 5 show that over 80% of the people that had taken the survey think that a movie works best usually in an urban enviroment, this is probobly due to the fact that most films are based around a city or urban landscape because a lot more goes on in these type of situations. The population is larger than in other rural areas what mean there can be more characters to add to the film, with more characters in a film a higher percentage of the audience will be able to relate to the characters involved in the movie production. An other probobilty that the audience prefere a film in a city is because it is very busy and overall you dont know what is going to happen or expect as lots of different types of crime and activity takes place unlike it does in a rural place. This makes the film un predictiable as you are unsure of what can happen, suprises often but an audience member on edge when watching as it has caught them off guard.

The statistics also show that none of the audience have said a movie is good if it based around a beach. This is because a beach is a location where you go on holiday to the seaside with family members. There is also lots of open space on a beach what makes everything visable from a far away distance what means that everything is seen before it can actually happen.

Question 6 is a question where the entire audience market had chosen one selected option. The results show that 100% of the people who had taken the survey prefured a complex plot line in a film. The probobility of the result being shown like that if the audience find the film too predictable and have worked out the story line of the production very early they will find the film very boring and un entertaining.

By analising the information from question 7 on the survey I have experianced a result of mixed results. The questionaire gave the audince the option to list some of their favourite films they have watched, in the result of this I can evaluate what genre of film is preferured and the style and the way the film is produced/directed. By doing this I can see a trend in the types of films the audience prefure, for instance the film Taken has come up mutipul times. By watching the film myself i know it is a thriller/action hybrid that involves kidnap. Yet again this is the same with other films that have been chosen by the audience, a wide selection of them involve kidnap or are a thriller hybrid movie. Because of my results I will make sure that my production is a thriller hybrid that involvs kidnapp and a sense of illusion for the audience, by doing this I will make sure my film is enjoyed by a wide range of the audience market. Also by giving the public the option to write what they want to the question it makes the results of the survey more personal, it gives the option to write what they want and the views of their own mind. This is useful because if when creating the survey not all the film options could be displayed however when looking at the results it takes a little more time to analise however the outcome is worth the statistics shown.

The next piece of information showed from the results of the questionare show that 80% of the people who had taken the survey watch a film to be entertained where only 40% watch a film for intellectual purposes and just under 10% watch it because it has been reccomended my someone else. I find that a film can be very intellectual as well as entertaining, sometimes the film is entertaining because the story is complex, unusual and the audience members have to work out what is going on. This enigma code makes the film plesurable to watch what gives it the bennifit of being entertaining for the audience provided, when creating my production I will make use aspects of making it intellectual as well as a high use of entertainment using enigma codes to keep the audience engaged.

The questionaire on question 9 provides a box where the people who had taken the survey can write their own opinion on the question. The question asks who the audience sterotypes as the main victim in a film, from analising the information from the questionair the public have announced that they expect the victim is a female that is weak and young. This is probobly down to the information that younger females do not have a lot of body strength compared to a male at the same age, this also relates back to Mulveys theory about female characters and there charactistics of being weak, submissive and un intelligent. However the one member of the audience who took the survey thought a victim is someone who is not expected to be hurt by the villian in the film. This would make the production of our film important and keep the audience engaged in watching as what they see is very un predicted and makes the final piece entertaining to watch.

The final question on the survey yet again provides a box where the audience can write there own interpritation on the question. The question asks what charactics they expect a villian to be subjected as, this is very important in our production as when the audience see the villian the audience will want to be able to recognise that that character has the antagonistic role as the production is very short their will not a lot of time of character building and devoloping. Two subjects in the survey have selected that a villian is dressed in dark clothing this is because bright colours often revert to happiness and childhood whereas if the antagonistic character is dark mysterious and cunning when first seen on camera the audaince will relate the dark colours and shadows to a shadowy sly character. An audience member has also said that if the villian is tall and big they would be catogrised as a villian, this ir probobly due to if someone is bigger and stronger than you they make you feel weak and submissive. The big build shows a sign of strength and power and makes other roles in the film look weak.
