NFRARED

Heat from an infrared (IR) lamp is a form of superficial heat that radiates from a heat lamp or IR lamp. Two types , called near IR and far IR.The infrared lamp are now common sight in every hospital and in many households. The infrared rays are electromagnetic waves with wavelength 750 nm to 400000 nm. t is beyond the red wave of the visible spectrum. Sun is the natural source of infrared radiation. t is also produced in the flames of the domestic gas stoves. The lamp that we use in the hospital is nonluminous artificial generator. nfrared radiation produces mild heating of the superficial tissues. t also causes a sediation of the sensory nerve endings. The incresed temperature of the tissue also causes relaxation of muscles and thus reduces pain.

There are several advantages to using infrared heat as a therapeutic modality. there is no pressure on the body, and the aide attending the patient can easily observe the area without interrupting the treatment. As with other local heating methods, the optimal local temperature is generally achieved within twenty minutes. Any extension of this time frame may lead to sweating and heating. The effects of infrared are very similar to those of the heat emitted by the hydrocollator packs.it also should not be applied over areas of impaired temperature sensation.

Effects of infrared heat :

1- Superficial increase in circulation 2- ncreased metabolism 3- Muscle relaxation through analgesia

Procedure : applying an infrared lamp

Wash your hands, identify yhe patient , and provide for privacy. nspect the lamp for good working condition prior to beginning the procodure. Explain the procedure to the patient . Place the lamp 30 inches (about 45 centimeters)from the body area receiving the rays. Drape the surrounding body parts not receiving treatment. Make sure that the infrared lamp has been turned on 20 to 30 minutes prior to its use. nstruct the patient to report any feeling of hot pot immediately since they may be warning signals of an imminent burn from the infrared lamp. 8- Remove the infrared lamp after 15 to 20 minutes. 1234567-
