Writingforarealaudience(notjusttheteacher)isoneofthebestwaystoget qualitywriting. R.Routman WritingEssentials Thepurposeofprovidingauthenticwritingexperiencesthroughouttheyearisto developawarenessofaudienceandpurpose,toteachwritingincontext,toexciteand motivatestudents.Thesewritingopportunities,asagroup,alignwiththeWritingCommon CoreStandardsasfollows:

Opportunity1:Lettertoselftobepresentedbackattheendoftheyear WhatOnthefirstdayofschool,studentswritealettertothemselves,tobegivenbacktothem onthelastdayofschool.Studentstellabitaboutthemselves,talkabouttheirsummeractivities, sharewhattheyareexcitedaboutorarewonderingaboutinthirdgradeandanyconcernsthey haveastheystartanewschoolyear.

Audience:Self(reflectivetoolasevidenceofgrowthandchange),andparents ObjectivesThisassignmentworkstowardmeetingseveraldifferentgoals.Itisanintroductory piece,tointroducethestudenttomeastheteacherandtoclassmates.AsIpurposelyprovidea minimalamountofmodelingandguidanceduringthisassignment,thisservesasasampleto showwhateachstudentiscapableofindependentlyuponentering3rdgrade.Itlaunchesusas writersearlyondayone,settingthetonethatwritingwillbesomethingwedotogetherfrequently. Asareflective/comparativepiece,thisletterwillbepulledoutthroughoutthecourseoftheyear tohelptrackgrowthandshowareasofimprovement. Opportunity2:Publishedbookreviews WhatThroughouttheyear,studentswillbeinvitedtowriteandsharereviewsofbookstheyare readingbothinandoutofclass.Reviewsmaytakeseveraldifferentformsandbepublishedin variousplacesviahardcopypublicationintheclassroomandschoollibrary,aswellasdigital publishingavenuessuchastheclass/schoolwebsitesandlargerarenasitessuchasKidBook Reviews,ReaderReviewKids,andTheSpaghettiBookClub. Audience:Otherstudentreadersinourschool,communityandbeyond. ObjectivesBookreviewsaremeanttobealiteratureresponseoptionaswellasatooltobuild literatecommunitiesofstudentswhotalkaboutbooks,offeringrecommendationstoone another. Immerse/ExploreStudentswillexaminevariousbookreviewsamples,writtenbybothstudents andadults.Sourceswillbebookreviewwebsites(seeabove),publicationsdistributedbylocal bookstoresandlibraries,theChildrensChoiceawardlists,studentsamplesfromprevious years.Introductorylessonswillshowstudentshowtofindandreadthistypeofwriting.Wewill locateandreadreviewsofbooksthatwehavereadtogether.Studentswillthenbeaskedto explorereviewsofbookstheyhavereadontheirown.Wewillusetheseexperiencestogather andcraftanunderstandingofwhatabookreviewdoesanddoesnotcontain,howitmight sound,etc.

Workshopplan(sharing,revision)Iwillmodelreviewsmultipletimesthroughouttheyear,adding onthethelevelofsophisticationwitheachiteration.Thefirstreviewwillcontainjustasummary. Thenextreviewwillbeasummaryandanopinion.Nextarecommendationwillbeadded. Finally,acomparisontoanothertextcanbecomepartofthewelldevelopedreview.Studentswill writereviewsinpairsorindependentlyasready,pieceswillbetreatedasongoingwritingwithin theworkshopformat,subjecttoconferencing,writingpartnermeetingsandexpectationsfor revising,editingandfinalpublishinginoneofthementionedformats.Reviewswillbeshared withinwritercelebrations,thenpublishedintheappropriatevenue. AssessingReviewswillbewrittenandassessedthroughouttheyear,sothatImaytrackand celebratestudentsongoinggrowthinunderstandingofcontent,format,styleandconventions. Opportunity3:Dialogue/sharedinformationwithSkypebuddies WhatOurclasshasathirdgradeSkypebuddyclassinTexas,ledbyafriend/colleagueofmine fromundergradGVSCdays.Whilesharedscienceworkwasagoodstart,andcancontinueto beapartoftheworkweshare,wecandomuchmore.ThisyearIdliketoleadtheclassesina Skypesessioninwhichstudentsareabletoposeasetofquestionsabouttheareas/schoolsin whichtheylive.Thequestionswillberecorded,andthenstudentscanchooseawrittenformat toshareinfo,perhapsavisitorsguidebook,pamphlet,setofmaps,website...whateverthey decideisagoodwaytogatheranddisplaytheanswerstotheclassquestions.Theproduct wouldthenbeshared,andafollowupskypesessionwouldprovidefeedback. Opportunity4:Writingto/forotherclasses WhatDuringthecourseoftheschoolyearwewillmaintainpartnershipswithseveralother classes.Wealwayspartnerwithayoungergrade,ourBretonBuddies,andoftenwriteforand withthem.Thisyearwewillexpandonthosepossibilities,creatingteachingtextstosharewith ourfriends.Wewillalsopartnerwithaclassatthehighschoollevel.Workingwithonefortheart teachersandherDigitalPhotographystudents,Iplantohave3rdgraderscomposepoetrytogo withimagescapturedbytheDPclass,lookingtocreateawebpublishedand/orbookanthology ofthefinishedwork. Audience:Youngerandolderstudentsandfamilies,largerschoolcommunity. ObjectivesTheBretonBuddypartnershipisalwaysdesignedtoaddasocialcontexttoour learning,andinourcase,toallow3rdgraderstoactasrolemodels,practicingleadershipskills anddevelopingacompassionaterelationshipwithayoungerstudent.TheDigitalPhotography partnershipisintendedtopromotecrossdisciplinecollaborationandelevatestudentinvestment inthewritingwork. Opportunity5:Opinionlettersauthors,localauthorities WhatAspersuasivewritingpractice,studentswillbeaskedtoidentifyanissuethattheycare aboutpertainingtoalocalconcernorissue,suchassuggestionstotherec.departmentforafter schoolprogramming,sharedconcerntolocalauthoritiesforsafetyissuesaffectingchildren (bikehelmets?crosswalkplacement?),requeststochangealocalbusinesspractice(bringback Supermanicecream),andothersimilarissuesastheyarise.Similarly,studentswillbeaskedto writetoanauthoroftheirchoicetoaskquestionsandofferopinionsaboutoneoftheirbooks.
